It may be something of a small gamble, but I would definitely wait until this autumn or winter before booking any spring '05 transatlantic travel. The dollar seems to be strengthening against the €, fuel prices may have peaked, and the end-of-year financials for the major airlines always result in panicky CFOs cutting prices like salamis to try to position for the new year.

Spend some time looking at possible cheap intra-Europe connections through an affordable "hub destination" - one that you could fly cheaply to from ORD, then connect at the same airport* to one or more of the cheap Euro carriers, for flights to/from Rome or Venice. Direct (or even connecting) flights from the US to Italy on all the major carriers seem always to be much more expensive than fares to places like London or Frankfurt, given the relative distances. I'll wager you can put a trip together for less money if you spend some time researching, plus exercising patience.

*Look at Dublin, Frankfurt, London Gatwick, Amsterdam and Copenhagen. Use to see who flys to where from where.

I will be flying out to London in May. I couldn't even conceive of looking for tickets now. (I am going on a cruise in December -flying from Atlanta to Miami-and it is too early to buy tickets!)
"uh-oh busted" is completely right. There are always seasonal sales. Start looking in January to get an idea what prices are running. I am almost positive you will see some type of Spring/Early Summer sale going on in February or March (For traveling in May). 3-4 months in advance is best for finding the best prices.
But - like "Uh-oh" said, if this is what you want, you should do it. Only you can decide- but I would really take some of the other comments on here to heart. Any flight times etc. listed now are just a guide and definitely NOT written in stone.
