May 1 in Venice: Dealing with the crowds

We will be in Venice for 4 days, including the May 1 holiday. I am trying to work out an itinerary for that day and know I should avoid San Marco and the Accademia.

Would the boats to Burano and Torcello be crazy? Or should I stick to some of the lesser sights, wandering around Castello and Cannereggio?

Holiday or not, go to San Marco around dusk...absolutely magic.

Your best bet would be to book a hotel far away from San Marco and other highly touristed areas, so you're not stepping right into the crowds as soon as you leave the hotel. And, yes, the boats - all of them - are likely to be jam packed.
