MAXXI Rome XXIst Century Art Museum - Anyone Been There? How Is It?

We'll be in Rome late May. The MAXXI is newish, and a bit out of the way, but we like contemporary art. Is it worth going there? Personal experience, please.

Last May, I visited MAXXI because I'm a fan of the architect, Zaha Hadid. The building was definitely worth the trip, but you may find the art more interesting than I did. If you don't take a cab, here is how I got there by public transportation, thanks to the excellent directions given me by the concierge at my hotel.

She told me to take Bus #280 at the Ponte Garibaldi stop on Lungotevere, right at the end of Via Arenula, a couple of blocks from my hotel. At the last stop, on Piazza Mancini, cross the street and take tram #2 for about 4 stops to Via Guido Reni. It's a few more blocks to the MAXXI. There were only two exhibits at the time and they were pleasant enough and the guards allowed me to photograph freely.

My favorite new museum in Rome is Centrale Montemartini, a former power plant that has been repurposed and renovated by a group of engineers. The art is not modern, but the installation of glowing marbles alongside giant machinery is extraordinary.

So, for you, MAXXI was for the building, not the art.

Would it make sence just to go and see the building from the outside? Or is the building inside worth the ticket. There are so many museums I would rather spend my time in.

Sorry, I haven't checked this site in so long.
AJPeabody: The architecture is fascinating, but the special exhibits were not. Check their website before you think of going in case a new exhibit is of interest-- or, like me, you are a fan of avant-garde architecture.

Soljeton't go just for the outside; it's the inside spaces that are unusual and impressive. Perhaps on the website, there is a day or evening when the museum is free or offers a reduced price. I had a museum staff I.D., so I received complementary admission.
