Matisse Exhibit in Paris?
 

Has anyone seen the new exhibit on Matisse's later works in the Musée de Luxembourg in Paris? I really like his papercuts, but haven't seen a real one.

I'm trying to see this exhibit, but do I have to reserve a ticket in advance? It must be crowded as it's reviewed in Financial Times this week.

Hi JC98, we're considering going to the Matisse exhibit this weekend (we're in London this week but if not we'll go in July when we'll be in France. That's how much I'd like to see it but it ultimately depends on how much you enjoy Matisse.

We have been lucky enough to see his cutouts at the Matisse Museum in Nice (and some other museums) so we're very excited to see these additional materials.

However, we've also attended an exhibit (Modigliani last year) at the Musee du Luxembourg and it was crowded and not particularly easy, or enjoyable, to view the works. I think we went on a weekend (mistake) but am not really sure. For that exhibit we had tix in advance (picked up onsite--about 45 minute wait because of timed viewings) but there were other people purchasing tix the day of (not sure how long they waited).

Thanks for the info. The museum's website is all French, so I'm not sure which day of the week it's close. Better get an online translator or maybe there's a French expert in this forum who could quickly tell us? Thanks.

Let me see if I could go there on a weekday. I was thinking of going there on a Sat -- the last day before I go home because prior to that I'll be running around hitting other museums/monuments w/ my 5-day museum pass! Maybe I'll get sick of museums by the end of the pass period. :)

Does anyone know if the d'Orsay or the Pompidou has Matisse's papercuts? If I get to see a few of those in the other places, then I don't need to see this exhibit. Yes, I'm definitely a big fan of Matisse, but have never seen any of his papercuts for real.

Anyone familiar with Mourlot know how faithful this will be to the original. The blue ink for this addition, for example, was prepared especially to match the original by a British firm because it was no longer available.

I just saw the Matisse exhibit and it is well worth the time. The exhibit focuses on a period in the 50's after Matisse had undergone serious surgery and focusses on his correspondence with Andre Rouvevre throughout the years (letters to and from Matisse), his work as an illustrator for books, his Jazz period, a beautiful tapestry, and some paintings. It was not crowded at all so that I could spend time on each piece of the exhibit.

Too bad the exhibit ends on July 17th!

An artist friend went to the exhibit and thought it excellent.

Those who will be in New York might wish to attend the show "Matisse: The Fabric of Dreams - His Art and His Textiles" at the Met until Sep. 25. There are 80 of his works and some of his personal collection of fabrics. The show was previously in England and France.

Too bad I couldn't make it when I was in Paris in early May. And I was disappointed that the Modern Art floor in the Pompidou was was closed as well, no reason given. I went there twice but was disappointed twice.
