Massive Flight Disruption In UK
Most airports in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the north of England are closed today with cancellations of flights in the South of England until at least midday due to volcanic activity
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8621407.stm I would suspect other northern European countries are also affected |
That's really amazing. I'd just read the account in the Telegraph when I saw your post.
|
I think it just depends on what way the wind blows, could be several days of disruption.
|
Just heard someone from the Met office in Iceland and he said flights from Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Northern Finland are also affected.
Interestingly Iceland flights are running to schedule as the wind is blowing the ash away from there. This has been the worst year I remember for disasters - earthquakes Volcano eruptions what next!! |
Flights from the US are delayed here as they have to fly a different route and all flights to the UK and Norway are cancelled.
It may affect Schiphol later. Hopefully not as my husband is away and is due back tomorrow night. |
The official forecast:
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/aviation...1271309704.png The times are at the top left, the coloured lines represent the height levels - the red boundary indicates the area from the surface to around 20,000 feet, the blue and green higher still. Ah well, it'll be a spectacular sunset for those as can see it. |
Lots of cancellations in Copenhagen too. And they are calling for more as the day goes on.
|
Some of the airports in the south of England are currently open and flights are running - however, as the cloud moves further south, services will probably be suspended.
I heard an estimate of a midday shutdown for City airport (London), for example. |
UK is now closed to all flights from Midday to 6:00pm

sounnds selfish but I'm glad I'm not flying today |

Eurocontrol has just announced the closure of airspace over the Netherlands, Belgium and parts of Germany, so my husband may not even get off the ground for is trip to Marseilles, never mind get stuck in Marseilles!
The Schiphol site seems to be overloaded so I can't see what is happening. |
Glad I got back home from Rome late last night then... This has all the distruptive potential to make the recent BA strike look like a minor nuisance.
|
BA have cancelled all flights today
|
Wow -- perfect timing for us, as we flew in to Heathrow yesterday. Our outbound flights were affected by the BA strike -- so I do feel for anyone who's vacations are being affected by this! What a bummer.
|
I'm due to fly from DFW to Frankfurt tomorrow. I will be following this closely. Thanks for the links!
|
I knew that the UK government should not have pulled the plug on Iceland's banks. People of Viking origin should not be trifled with.
|
Apparently the problem has been caused by a spelling error - The Icelanders thought the UK wanted ash rather than cash
|
Further update...nothing in or out of the Uk until 0600 tomorrow
