Mass at Mont St. Michel

Has anyone gone to Mass or Vespers in the Abbey at Mont Saint Michel. I have visited the website of the monks there and it sounds very complicated (phone first, then a monk will come to accompany you etc.) Just wondering if anyone has done it, would like to know where you meet the monk, etc. Thanks, Roman

Salut Roman,

Courtesy of the regional newspaper, here's a helpful link (including webcam):

http://www.france-ouest.com/mont-saint-michel/

And from the local diocese, here's everything about the community of monks & nuns, as well as service times:

http://catholique-coutances.cef.fr/

Um, it's all in French . . . but you'll be able to figure it out. Basically Mass is celebrated every day at 12.15.
Hope this helps!

Last September we went from Paris to Mt. St. Michel on our own -- with the information provided at this Forum. You can take the TGV train Montparnasse station to Rennes (@ 2h 30min); then bus to Mont St Michel (@1h 30min).
Mont St. Michel is 330 km from Paris.

Here are my notes:
TGV Train to RENNES from GARE MONTPARNESSE, Paris

Departing: PARIS MONTPARNASSE
(04/09 at 07:10)
Arriving: RENNES
(04/09 at 09:13)

RENNES(pronounced Ren) - BUS at 9:45 & 11am
Les Couriers Bretons is name of Bus Service.
The Bus Station is right next to train station. If you come out the front and stand with your back to the station, it is on the right hand side.
128FF ea roundrip (Discount for Seniors.)
1 & 1/2 hr trip to Mont from Rennes

BUS - From Mt. St. Michel to RENNES
4pm & 5pm
TGV TO PARIS
Departing: RENNES
(04/09 at 19:32 - 7:30)
Arriving: PARIS MONTPARNASSE
(04/09 at 21:40)
We arrived back in Rennes about 5 min before an earlier train than we had reserved seats on pulled out -- conductor waved us on board. Apparently that is done all the time. So we were actually back in Paris about an hour before this schedule's time.

It was a great day, even though we did not attend either Mass or Vespers.

Do check on the construction situation there as opening times/days may be different while the causeway is being redone. Or has it been finished already?

Salut encore!

Did a bit more research, and the Community doesn't celebrate Mass or any Offices on Monday. Also, if you do want to attend a weekday service, you have to telephone ahead of time; then a sister accompanies you to the service:

Sunday's the only day you can just show up at 11.45am. Hope this is helpful . . . it *had* become such a touristy place that I'm glad the Bishop invited some of the Paris community to use the Mont for its original purpose !
