Mary Poppins Attractions/Sites?
 

Hi All,

We will be in London next week with my family, including our 4-year old son, who LOVES the film "Mary Poppins." Even though it was an American film, are there any fun sites or attractions that pick up on the Mary Poppins theme that any one knows about that we can check out?

PL Travers lived in London but would a four year old really be interested in seeing where she lived?

How about buying him the books and read them to him during the trip?

There are some token sites that feature in the film such as St Paul's Cathedral and the Bank of England in Threadneedle street.

You've shattered my illusion now by saying it was an American film! Do you really mean to say that Dick van Dyke isn't really a cockney? That authentic (!) accent was put on? :-))

Maybe go to London zoo and see the Penguins?

It can't be an American film.
Everyone knows that fox-hunting always takes place in the Summer and as you say, that Cockney accent is a real clincher.

I would just try to keep crackers and bread with you so you can "feed the birds" whenever appropriate or maybe buy a cheap kite and head to a park? Your child might not be able to recognize the sites, but I am sure he would recognize those actions, especially if you sing the songs, at the top of your lungs, of course!

Ah shame, as there is no real Cherry Tree Lane. You can certainly go fly a kite in Primrose Hill or row a boat on Regent's Park.

And BKP, he can sing all the songs, word-for word, at the top of his lungs, believe me! It is quite entertaining! Thanks again, everyone. If there are any more tips, please keep them coming!

One of the best spots in London to feed the birds is St. james Park, right next to the bridge. You may see some baby ducks, too. Also, lots of friendly squirrels in that park will enjoy the food you bring them.

With any luck, you might see someone doing chalk drawings on the sidewalk.

Have you read the MP books? Compared to the Disney movie, there's a lot more sarcasm and far less sugar. Plus the books are much more imaginative. When your son is a little older, he might enjoy them. They're an interesting read for adults, too.

Ditto for Bambi. The book is a powerful nature story with some chilling scenes (esp. the "conversation" between the fox and the hounds).

BTilke--We are actually reading the 1st MP book right now--and you are right. Certainly does not have the "sweetness" of the movie!
