MARSEILLES - Day trip - CASSIS or AVIGNON ?

Off a cruise ship in Marseille for 1 day.
Been to AIX; thinking of CASSIS or AVIGNON for a day trip .
Any suggestions?
Or other?

thanks

Cassis is lovely for a few hours: walking around and having lunch maybe a quick boat ride to calanques.

Trying to think how far it is to Avignon - seems like it could be a bit of a ride to get there and then rushing around to see thing. You could do the Papal Palace. The town is a lot like Aix.

We did a walking tour of Marseilles last year and it was really great. Perhaps that would be of interest instead of having to schlep to Cassis.

After avoiding Marseille for years we finally spent 3 or 4 days there last year and loved it. So if you haven't spent time exploring Marseille, I'd say definitely do so. If you have, then I'd advise going to Cassis. It's one of our favorite small fishing villages anywhere. The only problem is, others like it too so it can get awfully crowded. So if you're going on a weekend or during peak tourist season, unless you won't have a car that needs parking, I'd suggest going a bit further up the coast to Sanary Sur Mer, also a nice little fishing village with similar vibe. Just doesn't have the calanques. I'd advise Sanary over Bandol which is also in the area but not quite as cute/charming.
