Marseille vs. Genoa
If you had four nights to spend in either Marseille or Genoa, which would you choose and why?
They seem similar in many ways so I thought this would be an interesting discussion. |
I would not spend 4 nights in either but a full day or two. I've done both several times and Genoa to me wins but Marseilles is nicer and nicer all the time. You can join the French Foreign Legion in Marseilles if you get tired of it.

I call these questions fish or meat.
Do you prefer meat or fish ? on mondays or on fridays ? Anywy, I'd choose Marseille because I can find bouillabaisse and they speak French. Or maybe not, I prefer Genoa, they have pasta and they speak Italian, it sounds more like holiday and less like work. Or maybe Marseille finally, the port is very nice. But Genoa has a nice aquarium I think. Hmmmm. Maybe I can change my mind on friday ? |
I have spent more than four nights in each. Loved each one and wish you didn't have to make the choice. Can't help at all with that.
|
Well, if I would have asked to choose between Genoa and Houston, that would have been a real fish and meat question.
|
I think this is just plain fish.
|
spend 2 days in each and report back.
|
For me, none of them. I would rather stay halfway between them in Nice
|
Nice is wonderful but does not seem to be as raw as Genoa or Marseilles, especially in the port areas and old towns of each.

There is a very interesting article on Genoa in the Travel Section of the New York Times.

I was just reading this blog today (of another Fodors forum member) and there are heaps of photos of Genoa on this post. Just scroll down a bit for Genoa.
