Hi
I visit Marseille fairly often. The rumours of drug fuelled violence must be from some bygone age. It is a good base for visiting Provence, the Calanques, etc. Peter |
wholeheartedly agree with peter.
it's a big city - which means the problems of any big city - but the setting, energy, good food, museums, etc. make it more than worth a visit. -Kevin |
To me Marseille is not only the city I fairly like but also the Marseille regions including the calanques that I adore(mentioned above by mpprh). I too hesitated for a long time to travel to Marseille but thanks to the opening of the direct TGV line Geneva-Marseille, finally I discovered the city and the calanques in September 2004. Since then I've been there 4 times, each time to hike on the calanques between Marseille and Cassis. I will be there again in 2 weeks (you can tell I don't hate Marseille, can't you?). Without calanques, probably I will not visit Marseille that often. Actually I use Marseille (and Cassis)as the base to visit different calanques every day. If you are wondering what the "calanques" look like, the folloings are the photos I took last month. They are of the calanques of Sugiton and Morgiou.

What surprised us about Marseille is that it's a "white" city, like San Francisco before all the ugly high-rises sprang up and blocked the view of the older, whiter buildings. We really enjoyed our too-short time in Marseille and plan to return some day.
