Marseille
First, I want to go just about anywhere. I have an "addiction" to Paris. My thought is to fly into London (have never been) for 4-5 days, Chunnel to Paris for 7-10 days. My other idea is to fly into Marseille, again a first, for 3-4 days and fast train to Paris. I'm curious as to any suggestions of a place between Marseille and Paris for a day or two? I've not booked yet, considering mid February. Please don't state the obvious "who in their right mind would go to Paris in February?"......my hand is held high. Me! So, Fodorites, please pile on. Where to go? I'm thinking for this trip 2 weeks. I'm also perfectly happy to stay in Paris for the entire time. I'd welcome any lodging suggestions. I typically rent an apartment and am finding most of my usual favorites have "disappeared". Looking for a one bedroom, either ground floor or with a lift. Thanks in advance.

The fact that the TGV between Marseille and Paris generally stops in Aix-en-Provence and Avignon will give you a clue as to the main cities of interest on the direct line.

Kerouac, Thanks for your reply. And pointing out the obvious. Pithy as always! Any insight on pros and cons of Marseille? I'm thinking ancient city, rough industrial port, fabulous city center. Again, thanks. BK

BunnyK, there is a very recent trip report about Marseilles on this forum. I don't remember who wrote it, but the title is something like "Nimes, Arles and Marseilles". Do a search for it. I think it will be helpful to you.

The Vieux Port area is delightful even though it is a tourist trap of sorts, particularly the restaurants. The Panier area is wonderful but you have to be ready to climb hills, a bit like Montmartre.

BunnyK, a poster just wrote a great trip report which included information and photos about his his time in Marseille:

This photo trip report by another Fodorite had inspired me to include it in a planned trip that ended up being canceled due to the pandemic. But Marseille still intrigues me.

The TGV also stops at Lyon, another prospect. Well, "near" Lyon; this relatively new line usually skirts the old cities, although Paris and Marseille stops are in the city core. Another characteristic of Marseille is its multicultural population, always a good influence on the cuisine.

How about Lyon?

Lyon is not on the direct line between Marseille and Paris, but of course it is possible to make a slight detour. Actually my train from Paris to Marseille once did reroute through the Satolas TGV station but that was because there was a problem on the line.
