Marriott Sunday Buffet Brunch in Budapest

Has anyone had brunch here? I read a review that said good things about the brunch and the view. I'm not staying at the Marriott, but friends of mine from Prague are meeting me in Budapest for the weekend, and I was looking for a nice place to enjoy brunch.

I recall that it was nice, though nothing extraordinary. If you want the best deal, try the Sunday brunch at Gundel. Gundel will cost more, and you won't walk to it (Metro plus perhaps 8 min walk), but it is the best way to experience Gundel on the inside.

That's good advice. The buffet at the Kempinki Corvinus [?] was good also, but no "soul". I think that was a Sunday night one...

How pricy is the Gundel for brunch? Is it a buffet? I'd love some details. Thanks.

It's a buffet; the price is 3,900 HUF, which works out to about $14--sounds like a bargain.

Rod, Sally and Jahoulih,

Thanks so much for your recommendations about the Gundel. Jahoulih, thanks for the website -- it really enhanced the recommendations.

A couple of more questions -- I'll be in Budapest in the middle of March -- do you think that I will need to make reservations for either brunch or dinner? I see that reservations can be made by email.

Also, on the Gundel site there is a page regarding the Owl Restaurant near the zoo -- any recommendations for this restaurant?

s.fowler Feb 3rd, 2002 11:34 AM

For Gundel I would make a reservation. Bagolyvar [the owl castle] is the "sister" to Gundel and just next door. It is very charming, the food is more authentically hungarian, the cooks are women and it is VERY charming. I'd reserve in advance there as they often have private parties.

And Bagolyvar is less expensive for a regular meal. I can't believe the buffet at Gundel is that cheap.... maybe I better fly over to test??

By way of comparison, the Marriott brunch is 3,500 HUF.

http://www.inyourpocket.com/Hungary/Budapest_hotels.shtml

Sally, I think you'll need to stay over two Sundays to test them both.
