I want to take a trip alone to a city. (My husband doesn't like travel as much as I do). It will be one week 4/8-4/15. My favorite thing to do in a new city is to walk around neighborhoods. I am thinking of Amsterdam. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I guess the answer to your question would depend in part on where you have already been and whether you have any others in mind.
Amsterdam is certainly a nice city for walking around, but so are many others. Paris, Prague and Venice for starters are all wonderful walking cities, to name a few.

Although others gave some good places, there are other cities which should consider.

Stockholm is great for walking. You can jump onto the subway, if you need to visit longer places but this is a beautiful city. There are lots of islands, bridges, and boats-and boats-and boats.

April is good in Stockholm too. It's expensive but the various sites are worth the extra money.

I think Amsterdam would be a great choice. My concern is that in April the weather might not be very good.

As a "neighborhood walker" myself I have enjoyed A'dam, Paris, and Venice on my own.

I think April in Paris is not the best time to go, unless it is late April.
I know, the song says it is great.
I was there in April and never saw the Eiffel Tower even though I felt of it.
Too foggy to see anything beyond my nose.

That's the beauty of Paris; the Eiffel Tower shoruded in mist, tourists falling off the quays into the Seine, etc... :)

One April the weather went from cold and windy, through gray and rainy to bright, sunny and warm in one day.

I think Rome, London, Paris, Madrid would be perfect. They all have the big museums, interesting neighborhoods, and plenty choices for day trips. If weather is a critical factor, Madrid and Rome should take the lead. Tough to beat Paris for a week of solo traveling, though....

If I were a first time solo traveler who did not know Europe well, I think I would agree with you on Amsterdam. It is a great walking city with lots and lots to see and a large proportion of the people speak English so you will have no language barrier and will be able to meet and converse with people more easily than, perhaps, in Paris. A week is a great amount of time to spend in Amsterdam; you can see the major sights, have time to walk around and shop or just walk and look, and time to do a daytrip or two. I realize I am making assumptions here but I think you are American from your e-mail address, so am guessing that you are a native English speaker.

I suggest a hotel in the Museum Area rather than the downtown area, near the Van Gogh and the Rijksmuseum and the Concertgebouw. I've stayed as a single and with my wife at the Hotel Piet Hein and would do so again. There are other hotels in that area also. We rode the train in to the main station from the airport and took the tram to the Van Gogh museum stop and the Piet Hein was about 3 blocks. http://www.hotelpiethein.nl/

Check out Matt from England's comments recently submitted in this forum. Also read the many entries following his lengthy highlights. The variety in Lisbon is superb, even to sipping port wine from the huge variety sold by the glass at the Port Wine Institute. Jay
