Yeast is one of those "umami" flavours (the indefinable savouriness that isn't saltiness) - like MSG!

bilboburgler Jan 30th, 2010 03:51 AM

I love it
My partner thinks it helps her with Migraines
I think you keep it in the cupboard (with the honey) and she thinks fridge for both (so we have two stocks).

Bovril is a little odd (boiled up what?) only ever had it when visiting little old ladies.

Marmite is a good flavour additive for stews if you have run out of herbs

And no one has mentioned OXO.

I like OXO. (as a drink - it would be a bit challenging on toast).

I also like to take my girlfriends up the OXO Tower. Mixed reviews to be honest.

Here's a positive review:

"When my boyfriend told me he wanted to take me up the Oxo Tower for my birthday, I was a bit hesitant at first because I didn't really think it was my scene. How wrong I was! I mean, yeah, so it's a bit of a strain on the old back pocket, and I admit I did feel a bit uncomfortable initially. But a couple of cocktails helped me relax and soon I was really getting into it - we carried on well into the night. It was a great experience and I really loved it - so much so that I won't let my boyfriend take me anywhere else now! So if anyone ever wants to take you up the Oxo Tower, just throw caution to the wind and go for it!"

Was watching an old Top Gear last evening and Jeremy Clarkson referred to the Russian TVR as "the Marmite of automobiles"--love it or hate it.

Of course, some have referred to Top Gear as the Marmite of TV shows.

Has anyone ever referred to Cholms as the Marmite of Fodorites?

Marmite is an abomination.

Champagne marmite deserves its own circle in Dante's hell.

>>Wonder what gimmicky flavour they'll come up with next?<<

Tikka masala marmite?

How about Ribena & bacon Marmite?

I think that would make CW go pale.

Thin

hi everone i have a question could some one just survive on marmite and bread eg 3 meals a day forever ???? would this be bad

yasronit Aug 1st, 2010 11:34 AM

My son just returned from a year in Australia and bought me two jars of Vegemite and it is a better than Marmite. Sadly I taught my children to acquire a taste for it when they were small and the two jars will not last long.

(He also bought Pineapple Lumps which only a Kiwi or Australian can truly appreciate.)

Yes ,marmiteboi - I think you could survive on bread and marmite- it's not junk food.

tangwah Aug 6th, 2010 11:39 AM

marmite and plain rice porridge (chinese style) for breakfast, lunch or dinner!! can't stand vegemite or bovril tho', tried them all when I was a kid.

>>could some one just survive on marmite and bread eg 3 meals a day forever <<

A little low on protein and some vitamins, I should think, but you'ld probably die of boredom long before that became a major issue.

I replied to Marmiteboi's thread asking the same question, which has sunk without a trace.
I wrote:
My son did for a couple of months when he was about 18 months old. All he would eat. I did offer him alternatives but it was a waste of time.
Then one day he refused the Marmite and ate a normal meal. He hasn't touched Marmite since.

I wouldn't recommend it for an adult though.
