Markets in Rome
Please tell me about flea markets and other interesting markets that I should pay a visit to while in Rome.
|
I've read that Porta Portese flea market (Sundays) is a terrible waste of time. In terms of flowers, fruit and spices, Campo de Fiore is great.
|
I second Campo de Fiore! Bella! My other favorite markets are Via Condotti Via Frattina, Via Del Corso...to me all of Italy is one big amazing market.

Campo de' Fiori is one of the more picturesque of Rome's dozens of neighborhood markets but also its most touristy. More authentic are the ones at Via Andrea Doria, Piazza San Cosimato (Trastevere) or Testaccio. The new indoor market that recently replaced Piazza Vittorio behind the train station, off Via Turati, is fascinating for it's multicultural character, surrounding by Asian, Indian, etc. communities.
As for Porta Portese, on Sunday mornings only, if you enter from Piazza Ippolito Nievo on Viale Trastevere, there is a decent "flea market" zone with antiques and the like. Don't bother with the end by Porta Portese itself which is mostly jeans and plastic housewares (and pickpockets). I also like the Ponte Milvio market, north of the center, which has produce but also clothing and "junk".

I'll be in Rome on Easter Sunday. Are any of these markets going to open then?
I was thinking of at least taking a look around the Porta Portese Market.
Alicia, I'm not sure about the others, but Campo de Fiori is a Saturday thing. Take in the market and then stop for a drink at the 'Drunken Ship' right in the corner of the square. The square really gets going at night though, very popular.
