Marienberg Fortress

We will be traveling from Bamberg to Rothenburg on a Monday and I had planned to stop in Wurzburg to tour the Residenz & Marienberg Fortress. Now I see that the latter is closed on Monday. I would have to backtrack to see it. Would I be missing something wonderful if I see the Residenz & skip the fortress?

We walked up to it, and walked around in the courtyard, and couldn't see anything to go into. We could imagine what a wonderful place it might have been 300 years ago, but I'd say the Residenz is worth 4x the time as the fortress.

I agree with Tomboy. The Residenz is gorgeous. I haven't seen the Fortress, but I think doing a tour of the Residenz and also seeing the Hofkapelle (court chapel) would make a stop in Würzburg worthwhile.

There's nothing to be sorry for not seeing Marienberg Fortress inside.

Inside are one or two museums, one of them about local history.

However, you could walk up to it and look at the town and surroundings (you don't have to be inside the fortress to see that), the river meandering nicely at the foot of the hill. That was what I liked best about the fortress.

Thanks so much for your help! I love the Fodors site! I get so much information. Peg, I really enjoyed reading about the trip you and your sister recently took to Europe. It is less than 3 weeks until my husband & I leave for our adventure!

By the way, there's parking AT the courtyard of the Fortress, and one can drive from there to the Kapppele, so if you had a car, you can see the outside of those two from the outside. Parking would be the only challenge. But if time is short, focus on the Residenz.
