Maremma coast?

We really want to stay in an agriturismo or apartment with kitchenette on the coast in the Maremma area. We'd like to stay at the lovely agriturismo, Poggio ai Santi but get no response from emails or letters :( Any ideas how we might reach them? Any other ideas near the sea...prefer the southern part (San Vicenzo and south) as we will have already done two weeks in the heart of Tuscany. Thanks!

Hi Suegj - The Argentario peninsular area is attractive and fairly convenient for the southern Maremma. Consider Porto Santo Stefano.

Castiglione della Pescaia (- near Grosseto) is also a pleasant choice.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Hello Suegj,

We have had this same sort of trouble in the past with other agriturismos and especially this time of year. They are probably closed and will get back to you later... frustrating for us but. I see that they have a FAX so I would try that and then lastly call.

Steve, We are thinking of one night in Orbetello. Would you choose that or Porto Santo Stefano AND do you have any hotel/albergo recommendations.

I would definitely go for either Ercole or Santo Sefano both take you back to the sixties and have loads of chararcter. The beaches are Ok but there is plenty to see in the local area - try to get to the beach at Alberese - it has oines falling into the sea and has been the subjest of many photographs/calenders.

Orbetello is pretty soulless can be very busy and is a lot more tourist down market than Argentario.

We stayed at Hotel Piccicolo on Argentario is was fine but is is most of the headland - was expensive for its facilities.

Hi Jnjfranz - I don't know Porto Ercole, but would certainly choose Porto S Stefano over Orbetello.

I can't with hotels, I'm afraid (- I day-tripped there).

There are some nice-looking places listed more inland but that gives you the chance to visit the thermal pools as well as the beaches: http://www.altamaremma.org/vacation_rentals.htm

Thanks for everyone's help here. Will try to fax and see if I can get in touch with Pogio Ai Santi this month. Meanwhile, several people have rec'd the Argentario area and I've been researching -- looks terrific! Anyone ever stay at Hotel Torre di Cala Piccola in Santo Stefano? Re: comments on Orbetello -- suspected it was not what we were looking for.

We have stayed at the hotel - it's fine and has an infinity pool to match any in the world - unless you want to pay $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to stay at the famous Il Pelicano down the road - its the best bet on Argentario. It dis not have evening meals when we stayed so you have to drive to the towns for a meal - don't drink the coast roads make Amalfi look like a motorway.
