Is a taxi the best way to get from VCE to Hotel Violino d'Oro? Best = quickest and not too much money. Are water taxis really expensive?

Yes - water taxis from the airport into Venice are expensive - in the range of $100 or so - depending on location of hotel.

You can take a bus to Piazzele Roma and a vaporetto from there. Or even a water taxi - and it should be less from there.

There are essentially two ways to get to Venice from the airport. Land and water. on the land side there are two bus lines. An express bus, a blue ATVO bus which departs from in front of the airport and deposits in Piazzale Roma in about 20 minutes. The other bus is an orange ACTV bus which has more stops and runs 25-30 minutes. ATVO is 3 euros per person the ACTV is I think 2 euros per. It is run by the same folks that run the vaporettos so if you by a pass at the airport for your stay in Venice you can use it on this bus. From Piazzale oma you walk a short distance to the vaporetto stopon the Grand Canal get on the #1 or #82 boat and get of at Sna Marco/Valloressa. Then walk to your hotel. YOu could also take a land taxi to P Roma, but it will be more costl and I don't think worth it.

On the water side there are again 2 choices. A private water taxi, which is most of a the time a lovely shiny mahogany hulled craft that will take maybe 8 or more with luggage and make you feel like James Bond. they will deposit you even closer to your hotel. But they're pricey, anywhere from 80 to 100 euros. They will be fastest because they won't have other stops and they are speedier on the water.

You can also take the public boat Alilaguna. It's a larger bus like transport that make a couple of stops before getting to Venice. You'll want to get off at the San Marco stop. It should run around 12 euros per person and takes a little over an hour.

Both water options are located about 10-15 minute walk from the main terminal to the docks. SOmetimes there is a shuttle bus, for free. It is a fairly easy walk though. Tickets for Alilaguna and the buses are purchased in the arrivals terminal. Turn left as you come out of the gate entering the main terminal and you'll see the windows In theory the rates for the water taxi are set, but you'll want to ask and pay when you get on. You don't want a big surprise when you get to your destination.

They all work and for where you going all the public transports will get you there within a few minutes of each other.
