Maps Online
I love the maps in my guide books however find it difficult to copy them as it is not easy to get them to flatten out. I never travel w/ the books and just want a tourist map which will show streets and the highlights in a city. Are there any good ones for free that can just be copied from the Internet? I know I can wait to get them once in a city but would rather copy my own so that they are just one lightweight page that I can fold into my pocket.

I use Google Maps. Just keep enlarging until you get the street map scale. They are good because they show one-way streets, useful for navigating in a rental car.

I tried Google Maps but it only gives MAJOR sites not all the secondary sites which are on tourist maps. Any other suggestions? I am going to Venice and it is all walking so I need a very clear, exact map so that I don't waste time wondering around. I know this can be fun however I will only have two days there so need to be productive.

For Venice you need a real map--buy one on Amazon--the Fodors City pack is good.

I use frommers.com sometimes to get maps. They have most of their maps from their books in online format. Here is a list of their Rome maps http://www.frommers.com/destinations/rome/64_maps.html

While I love Google Maps, you have to be aware that they often have sites in the wrong place. An example is Rome. Google has the Ara Pacis next to Piazza Cavour, wrong side of the river.

Here's one that would be pretty hard to beat:

Sorry. You must mean downloadable from the web. Never mind.

Hi
Haven't found any yet for free. Plenty for sale. The alternative is to visit the Tourist office when you get there. I found the tourist maps excellent. Why they don't make them available via their official websites is a mystery to me (but relief for the map sellers no doubt). Official website - http://www.turismovenezia.it/eng/ |
