Malpensa to Milan Central Shuttle

I have gathered that there are two options (either train or shuttle/bus) to get to Milan Central from Malpensa.

I am trying to find out how to locate each of them from international arrival/customs, what the costs are for each, how long the travel time, and is the train much preferable to the shuttle?

thanks, very much,
atlchx

ps: my wife seems to think that there are two train stations in Milan Central. Is this true, & if so...which would we need to reach for a train to Nice, Fr?

also, do both the shuttle bus and the train from Malpensa reach this station?

There are 2 trains from Malpensa to Milan, but one of them doesn't go to Centrale station, so if you are transferring onwards to Nice, you want the train to Centrale or the bus. You do NOT want the train to Cadorna station.

The bus is simpler if you haven't already purchased your train tickets, because the bus lets you off on the same level of the station as the ticket office/machines. The buses leave Malpensa from right outside the terminals, and you can buy a ticket from the conductor (I forget how much they are now).

If you already have your tickets to Nice, you can find the train to Centrale by following signs. The commuter train is one-seat ride and drops you off right inside Centrale, on the same level of the platforms where you will catch a train to Nice. If you need a ticket at that point, you will need to take the escalators down to the ground floor ticket offices/machines.

There really is not much difference in time between train and bus, although buses can get caught in traffic (although I have often gotten stuck on a train that isn't moving for unexplained reasons).

I forgot to say that, at the airport, you will find ticket machines to purchase tickets for the commuter train to Milan centrale, and a ticket window (where you might also be able to buy tickets onwards to Nice, but I am not sure of that.) You might also be able to buy your commuter train tix online but again, not sure. Probably someone else here has recent experience or try Man in Seat 61.

I've not taken the bus, but we've used The Malpensa Express train from MXP to Milano Centrale several times, and we think it's great... it runs approx every 30 minutes... the ride is approx 35 minutes, and you can buy your tix online in advance if you want... i think it's 12 euro one way... you pick up right in basement of Terminal 1 @ MXP airport... and get off right at the Milano Centrale Station!!! click this link, buy the tix, have fun & don't look back... http://www.malpensaexpress.it/en/

remember, always be grateful - only kindness matters...

I'd look into flying from Malpensa to Nice. It's at least 6 hours by train.

The bus goes to Milano Centrale, and trains go to both Milano Centrale and Milano Nord Cadorna. I haven't taken the bus in years, but I think it takes about an hour (subject to traffic). Trains to Centrale take 52 minutes and depart at :13 and :43 minutes after the hour. Trains to Nord Cadorna take 35 minutes and depart at :28 and :58 after the hour. There is metro service between the two train stations. Trains to Nice depart from Centrale.

I believe the train fares are slightly higher than the bus fare by a couple of euros, but I prefer the trains. You can't buy the Malpensa Express train tickets in advance. I don't know about the bus tickets.

Search the train timetables here, using Italian spellings. From Malpensa Aeroporto, to Nice Ville.

cosmikcowboy, it's nice to know you can buy the shuttle train tickets in advance. Thanks.

thanks all, feel much better know these options.

@Jean:

where do you recommend to check for last minute deals on flights from Milan - Nice?

I have to admit 6am arrival to Milan from the US, then thello train departure at 11am, followed by a 5+ hour train ride to Nice doesn't sound like fun.

Flights that I am finding from Malpensa are not direct, and with layovers don't show to save much time. We have planned arrival in malpensa 6am this Friday, direct (thello) train departs 11:00am and arrives Nice approx 16:45.

I'm willing to pay for flights if we can catch a mid/late morning flight to shorten the journey.

What day of the week? A French company called Twin Jet has very limited direct service Malpensa-Nice.

But if your final destination is Nice, perhaps flying into Milan wasn't the best plan. Can you change your ticket? There are direct flights JFK-Nice and better connecting cities than Milan.

If you end up taking the train instead of flying, you can buy some delicious food and wine inside the Milano Centrale train station to ease the pain of the journey. Realistically, if your transatlantic flight is scheduled to land at 6am this Friday, you will not be leaving Malpensa until 7.30 am. Figure that you will be in the station at 8.30am or later. If you need to buy tickets that is your first task, but if you already have them, just head to either the Sky Bar or Bistro Centrale and get yourselves some coffee and pastries. (At the Sky Bar, you can also check your e-mail). Leave yourself enough time to do some shopping for Milanese salumi, local cheese and wine and bread. You can get them in Bistro or in nearby shops. There are chocolate shops too. If you are vegetarians, look for Juice right near the Sky Bar.

If the Thello train is a one-seat ride (get the best class you can afford), you will be able to doze comfortably. (Bring earplugs.) There will be coffee and food on the train as well. And more wine!

One more tip: Don't eat much on the plane, especially not the breakfast. It will make the extra travel easier.

Silver lining play book sandralist!

Love it.

Btw, What's a single seat train ride mean?

sandralist Jul 14th, 2015 11:17 PM

You don't need to change trains.
