Malpensa to Florence in a Day
Hi Fodorites -
My sisters are traveling to Florence from Milan/Malpensa next month and I am trying to help them find the best solution to get to Florence with the least amount of difficulty and expense. They planned a last minute trip due to the great airfare they got to Milan but they will be heading straight to Florence from the Milan airport.
Here are my questions:
Do they need to take the Malpensa express train to Milano Centrale to change trains to get to Florence?
Or can they catch a train to Florence directly from Malpensa and bypass the city of Milan completely?

Hi Wanna - From Malpensa they should take the Malpensa Airport Shuttle bus - NOT train - direct to Milano Centrale station.

From Milano Centrale there are regular Eurostar/IC trains to Florence.

Timetables will be adjusted around Dec. 12 (a yearly occurence) so if you don't get the results displayed right now for next year, no worries, there will plenty of trains.
There are new high-speed rail sectors near Bologna to come into use very soon, reducing the travel time between Milan and Florence, so timetables may change yet again at some point. But - again - it's a peak route with no end of fast options all day long.
The airport bus takes about an hour to Milano Centrale station.
The private airport train Malpensa Express dumps you at a Metro station from where you have to connect to Centrale - not convenient).
SMN (Santa Maria Novella station, named after the patron saiint of the church across the piazza) is the biggest in Florence with the most trains, but depending on the location of your hotel SMN may not be the closest for you. Most trains stop at SMN but if you figure out the alternative station Campo di Marte to be better for you, booking a train that stops there is an option. Campo di Marte is on the opposite (Eastern) side of the historic center from SMN, almost equidistant to the center, so look it up and decide.
