I just returned from Milan yesterday and you should definitely take the train. The Malapensa Express train(www.malpensaexpress.it) only costs 9 Euros per adult (a taxi is approximately 80 Euros to downtown). Very comfortable and convenient.

Centrale railway station is off the main shopping district and requires further travelling to reach it, while from Cadorna station several stockhoues can be reached on foot.

With regards to cost, you have two options (1) shuttle bus or (2)train, the Malpensa Express. Personally I prefer riding on the train; it's easy, departs from lower level of the airport (sorry, can't recall out of which terminal). Before choosing which of these options are best for your circumstance, take a look at exactly where you want to be when getting to downtown Milan. Are you planning to continue on to another destination in Italy? If so, the shuttle bus drops you in front of Milano Centrale train station and is more convenient than taking the Malpensa Express out of MXP. The Malpensa Express train comes into Milan at the Cadorna Nord station --- this has connections to the other underground stops along Milan's metro system. <BR>

I flt into and out of Milan Malpensa Airport about 6 or more times a year and always take the airport shuttle, located outside of baggage claim, into the downtown area. It is a 50 minute ride and costs about 4E. It makes several stops, culminating at the train station. It is definitely worth it and is far more economical than taking a train or taxi.
