Malpensa airport to Bellagio

Is there public transportation from Malpensa to Bellagio??? We could have the use of a car, but have been told that the roads are narrow and winding - and none of us have driven in Italy - so this is whole new experience - plus we will just have landed after a long trans-Atlantic flight with connenctions!

Thanks!!

By train - two routes - one to Milan Centrale station then change for Como mainline station but better IMO and cheaper I think is to take the older Malpensa Express train that goes to Milano Cordona station and transfer midway to a rail line that ends in Como right by the boat docks for boats to Bellagio - or you can take a bus from this Como station to Bellagio. Commuter trains - no reservations possible just buy ticket at airport and ask about where to transfer - town name escapes me right now.

There is a train from Milan Centrale that stops at Varenna, which is a short distance from Bellagio.

It's a short walk from the train to the dock, and the boat ride takes about 10 minutes or so. I think that's the best way to go.

There are boats from Como also, however they take about an hour -- altho' you'll have lovely views of the lake.

Thanks, all good advice - and tomorrow I shall be able to call an 800 number to get details of the trains from the airport to Milan Centrale and then to Varenna (which does seem the most direct. BUT I am re-thinking and wonder if we should plan to drive - I know we will be tired, but it seems a long journey after being in transit for more that 12 hours to get from Malpensa to Milan Central and then a train to Varenna and then the boat ride and then to find our rental house....anyone agree or disagree??? I mean how narrow can the roads be???? Thanks again!

How narrow? You can "experience" the route using Google map street view. Of course, you don't get to experience the buses and other fast drivers coming at you nor the one on your tail :-)

How many are you?
A driver will cost about 180E and may be $$$ well spent.

sophia, I did the journey by train to Varenna after an overnight flight from the US, and it wasn't bad. Frankly I'd be less comfortable driving with jet lag than traveling on the train, especially if it will be your first time driving in Italy.

You really don't need a car when you're at the lake b/c you can take the ferries from town to town.
