I visited Mallorca in November '83 (near Alcudia) and would highly recommend it. I doubt it has changed too radically since then. I stayed with friends, so I don't know a lot about the hotel scene. But the island is beautiful, very rugged mountains along the northern coast giving way to windmill dotted farmland in the mid-section.

We celebrated Thanksgiving by shopping for, and actually finding a turkey in the "mercado" in the village. It was just hanging there, head & all (I think the feathers had been plucked) & the butcher was kind enough to remove the head. Sure beat the butterball!

Palma is a pretty good sized city & probably has most of the amenities a traveller would seek. We only took one trip there & ate lunch at a Tapas bar. The food was delicious (we sat at the bar itself & pointed to all the dishes that looked interesting) and the owner poured us a glass of a home-made liqueur. Yee-hah!

There is a road that goes through the mountains which is well worth taking. At one point you can drive down a steep & winding road which drops you at a sublime, tiny (pebbled?) beach. A detailed map should show you exactly where this spot is. Cap de Fomentor is dramatic; one can perch above it, gazing down the cliffs which plunge to the rich blue Mediterranean. There is a monastery in the mountains which is open to the public & worth a trip. Also the villages of Arta & Sa Pobla.

The area in which I stayed had a number of condos & time-share units. My friend was overseeing the construction of a lawn bowling facility of the British variety. Many Brits go there on holiday. Yet the area was still relatively unspoiled. My favorite memory was falling asleep to the gentle clanging of sheep bells high up in the hills behind our building.

Please feel free to email me if you have any further questions.

and...on the other hand, Sevilla is a beautiful city with lots to see and do.
It's easy to spend 3-4 days there. Most people enjoy it.
