Mallorca in June - trip almost planned! - Need a wee bit more help :-)

Two females going to Spain at the beginning of June. We are spending 6 days in Mallorca.

After HOURS of research and going back & forth (and back & forth) on picking an area to spend these days in, we finally decided on 2 nights in Palma and the last 4 nights in Santanyi (to relax and hit the beaches).

I found this awesome little boutique hotel in Santanyi, "s'Hotelet De Santanyi". We are splurging and spending $340 per night (USD).

The help I need is finding a hotel in the Palma area (between Palma & Portal Nous) that is well situated, clean and affordable. (approx. between $100 & $150 per night). I found three that may work but before booking I wanted to (a) get some recommendations and (b) possibly get feedback on the hotels I've chosen. Here are the hotels:

1.) Mirador Hotel - located near the marina ($137 per night, no breakfast)
2.) Catalonia Majorca Hotel - located on the Bay of Palma ($95 per night, no breakfast)
3.) HM Jaime III - located in center of Old Town Palma ($154 per night, includes breakfast)

Other hotel recommendations are appreciated!

Our goals while in Palma are (but not limited to): explore Palma, travel to Soller via train, Bellver Castle, Palma Cathedral, Portal Nous, and have some great food and wine!

All feedback is appreciated!

Happy Traveling!

I was told that the Sheraton Arabella Golf Hotel is nice. We are going this summer too so I don't really know yet.
How are you getting to Mallorca? We are coming from Barcelona and I don't know the best way to travel. Any suggestions?

LKL Apr 1st, 2011 10:15 AM

We are coming from Barcelona, as well. We are flying. It's a quick flight (about an hour) and around $100 (USD). The other option would be a ferry but they take several hours to get there.

I will check out the Sheraton.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Isn't Vueling allot cheaper or are you saying $100 both ways? They have one way flights for 30 euros.

LKL Apr 1st, 2011 04:15 PM

$100 RT. I'll have to check out Vueling. I only checked briefly to get an idea.

Thanks for the info!

What made you choose this hotel?

We have been to Santanyi 6 times over the past 4 years and to mallorca over 30 times. Santanyi is a lovely, lovely place and is close to some great quiet little coastal towns.

There are good restaurants in town and a good market each week. The area is a mix of affluent Mallorquins and Germans. It has beautiful farming countryside and in many ways reminds me of a micro Tuscany.

However, I would probably say that the hotel is extremely overpriced in view of its location and facilities.

Try some of these we have stayed at 4 of the hotels featured aqdn know most of the others. They are mainly very good quality and good value.

Try to make it to Porto Petro and Colonia san Jordi they are great little sleepy fishing villages.

Best way to get from Barcelona is Ryanair which should be very cheap.

Humptynumpty,

Which 4 hotels have you stayed at? I only see one hotel that is close to Santanyi on the website you mentioned (Sa Galera Hotel).

I found the hotel we booked on Trip Advisor.

humptynumpty Apr 5th, 2011 09:13 AM

We have stayed at Sa Galera which has a good lcation but walkable into town. I suppose it does depend on your preferences, we usually drive at night but it is lovely to walk to restaurants.

Was great fun, with very good breakfasts. Again it is isolated and so you have to drive.

Is on our wish list as it is very close to the best beach on the island but again is isolated.

I would't dissuade from s'Hotelet De Santanyi, we haven't stayed but have pasted many times. It cetainly looks stylish but for the money there are some very good country finca hotels around.

Again, I would totally agree with your choice of Santanyi. The weather is far and away the best on the island, which can get cloudy around the mountains in summer.

So, I'm back! I've actually been back for a couple of months. I just want to let you all know that.....I ended up in Santanyi! I'm in love with Santanyi! If Santayi were a man I would marry him!!

A beautiful, quaint and peaceful village. The beaches were about 15 minutes away. We hit Es Trenc and Cala Mondrago. We stayed at a boutique hotel called S'Hotelel De Santanyi. It was one of the nicest hotels I've ever stayed at. Breakfast was included in the rate and was the highlight of the morning!!!!!!! It was definitely not cheap especially since I'm coming from the U.S. and dollar is crap but totally worth it! I can't wait to return!! Thanks to all for their traveling tips! A special thanks to humptynumpty! You are very knowledgeable when it comes to Mallorca. Had it not been for some of your advice, we would have stayed in Soller. We ended up doing a day visit to Soller, which was incredibly beautiful, but Santanyi was exactly what we were looking for. Thanks again!!

Hi LKL

Really pleased you loved Santanyi. If you would like to go halves when the pound is worth anything we are buying this :

http://www.kilian-partner.com/town-h...5ED-gb230.html

I have spent many years avoiding the usual places in The States and loved every minute of it. We do the same in Europe and there is a lot more out there after Amalfi, Portofino and Oia.

There is nothing better then wandering into Santanyi at sunrise and getting fresh bread from the bakers. It's ashame you didn't post just before leaving. If you take a look at googlemaps there are lots of secret beaches which are difficult to get to but are quiet.

I'll try S'Hotelel De Santanyi next time we are over (which is probably going to be next Feb.

Did you make it into Palma?

Next time you are over save up some more to stay at :

https://www.caprocat.com/en/index/another-world.html

It is very new and is getting extremely good reviews.

Over the years Spain has started to close in on Italy in terms of style and service.

Humptynumpty,

Count me in for the townhome in Santanyi!! I would love to live in that beautiful city. There is something about the Mediterranean that gets to me as if there is a connection to my soul. I've been to a few Mediterranean areas in France but there was something about Santanyi that made an even bigger impression, which I didn't think was possible. I HEART SANTANYI! I was trying to find a magnet that said this before I left but to no avail. :-(

We made it to Palma for only 2 days and one of those days we spent traveling to Soller and wandering the streets. We weren't entirely impressed with Palma, although we didn't give it much of a chance. Maybe next time. On our way to Santanyi, we decided to divert and take a road trip to Valldemossa. It was very beautiful but very touristy. We soon left and headed towards Soller to see the port since we had missed it the day before. We went through Deia and my heart almost fell out of my chest. The little hairs on my arms stood up! So beautiful! I was in complete awe. Have you spent any time there? This is where I picture my honeymoon (of course, that's when I decide to marry - ha, ha.) The views were just breathtaking. What a romantic little village. Unfortunately I was traveling with a friend so we weren't able to take advantage of our amorous find. Next time for sure!

I look forward to returning to Santanyi. Hopefully it will be sooner than later. Maybe I will have saved up enough $$ to stay at the Cap Rocat hotel. It looks so out of the ordinary. I love it!

Happy traveling and thanks again for all your wonderful advice! You will hear from me again!

Cheers,
L.

LKL and humptynumpty and anyone else reading this - we are going to Mallorca at the end of July so I have found this thread very interesting.

We were thinking of staying in Colonia Sant Jordi and I was wondering if either one of you have any comments to make about this choice.

Humptynumpty, I see that you did suggest a visit there. Could you tell me more about it? Can you recommend a hotel? Restaurants?

We are also open to suggestions to stay elsewhere but we do not want to be a long drive away from the airport.

Thanks for any help and suggestions.

PS: I posted my own thread yesterday asking just about the same questions but I thought I would top yours, LKL, to get your and humptynumpty's attention.
