Mallaig Ferry to Skye
 

My friend and I will be traveling from Edinburgh to Mallaig on Sunday, May 26, 2019 via ScotRail, and then on to Skye on the ferry. The train schedule (which so far only shows dates through May 5th) indicates we'll arrive in Mallaig at 17:45, with the CalMac ferry leaving at 18:00 for Skye, based on the summer timetable. In the event of delays, does the ferry base its departure on the arrival of the train, or does it tend to stick to the schedule? I'm trying to figure out if we need to make reservations for the night on Mallaig just in case.

You might also check for transport at the Skye end. There was a long wait for a bus when I took the ferry, and I wound up sharing a taxi, which may have been pre-booked. The ferry dock seemed very isolated.

Thank you, thursdaysd, for the suggestion, but we'll be met at the Armadale dock by my sister and brother-in-law in their rental car - they are going to Scotland earlier in the month and arriving on Saturday via the Skye bridge.

why not go Edinburgh-Inverness-Kyle of Lochalsh -bus across bridge to Skye? The Inverness-Kyle of Lochlash rail line is ubiquitously listed in the top scenic trains in U.K.

The ferry/train schedules are not coordinated. So if you are delayed the ferry will have sailed. It is a 5 or 6 minute walk from the station to the ferry and you need to be ON BOARD 10 minutes prior to sailing. So that is cutting things very close. Instead of sweating it, I might consider taking the later train that arrives in Mallaig around 11 PM, stay the night, and take the first ferry over in the AM.

Perhaps because the Inverness / Kyle of Lochalsh journey tends to be from 30 minutes to an hour longer and usually requires more changes.>

But a leas you guaranteeably get to Skye and waiting friends, but alas yes you do miss the great Rannoch Moor! (good one h t!)
