Malcolm Miller Tour
How much is this tour and do the tours run year round?
Last time I took it was right before the introduction of the euro - it was 40 francs, which would be about $6.50. It was half that for children. The price has probably gone up some.
Tours are given year-round except when the cathedral is being used for mass or another purpose, and the English-language ones are offered at noon and 2:45 pm. Malcolm Miller does a fair bit of traveling on the lecture circuit, so he's not always there, but he has well-tutored assistants who fill in for him.
We were just there last April. It was 10Euros per person and worth every ...what...eurocent? Anyway, meet inside the cathedral just outside the giftshop at 12 noon. MM usually tours the US and UK during Jan and Feb (I think that's what his book says...it is at home, I'll check tonight), but otherwise it is year round. I'd say it's a must if you really want to appreciate Chartres...even if it is "only" with an assistant!

We had the pleasure of one of Mr. Miller's tours and it is wonderful. Do not miss the chance to do this.
I would recommend taking the tour twice if you can. He will adjust the tour content to provide new material if there are some who took a previous tour.

I'm glad he can now charge for the tour. When I took them in 1981, he had to rely on tips.
Just a comment on this justly famed guide. When we were there in 1980 and 1982 he told us how much to tip! He came to visit one of our group the next year, probably in Jan. or Feb. She lived in Laguna Beach, right on the water, in a very lush house. He enjoyed himself so much that she wasn't sure that he'd ever leave!
Just curious. About how old is Malcolm Miller?
Now that he charges, are you still expected to tip?
He's in his late 60s. I don't recall any expectation of a tip on top of the fee.
How do you find out his schedule, and can you sign up in advance?
See above - noon and 2:45. No need to sign up in advance; just show up a few minutes before the appointed time.
I'm sorry - by "his schedule" you probably don't mean the times, but rather when he'll be there in person. I don't know, but the "Lonely Planet" says daily except Sunday from Easter to November, so that might be a good approximation.
He now charges rather than leave it to everyone to "tip". It is 10Euro.
