Malaga for month of January
 

We are a couple in our early 60’s and are thinking of spending the month of January in Malaga. We hope to do trips for 3 or 4 days during the month to other parts of Spain. We are thinking about renting a car for our excursions so we can explore along the way. Would love to hear your thoughts on a month in Malaga. Our next month hopefully will be in Sicily but not sure where we should base ourselves. Suggestions would be great.

Can you go a bit later for better weather?

Barbara, off topic I know, but I'm wondering if you're my sister. Really.

We often spend a few months in a small town 30km north of Malaga usually and love it even in January. Car rental at that time of year is dirt cheap. We usually for te duration at Malaga airport and return the car at the end of our stay. Although parking in Malaga is not easy!

The road system is excellent and Malaga is well positioned for visits to Granada, Córdoba, Loja Sevilla etc. Although some of these would be better done over a couple of days (Sevilla especially).

Malaga itself has a thriving food scene and a lot to see and do, we would often drive into the city either for the day or to spend a spent a few nights. We found a great apartment near Artazanas market in the centre.

We spent 2 nights in Malaga in September and loved it! The city center is beautiful. For sightseeing, we did the following:

Cathedral - beautiful with nice gardens surrounding it
Alcazaba - it is beautiful with ruins, small fountains and patios, lots of greenery and lush flowers, and gorgeous views of the port and the Mediterranean as you walk uphill.
The Castle - ruins of a castle that are higher than the Alcazaba.
Picasso Museum - very interesting. (There are many more art museums in Malaga.)

A thriving food scene as Crellston states.

Our friends rode on the ferris wheel located at the port. Not sure if it's running in January.

We took the bus from Granada to Malaga; it's only a 1.5 hour ride. As Crellston states, Malaga is in a great position to visit Granada, Cordoba, and Seville, and I'm sure other places that we did not visit.

Many people, esp. those from northern climes, spend the winter in Malaga province, the Florida of Europe. The weather can be very nice or it could be a bit chilly. Certainly won't be hot. Go for it !
