Malaga Christmas lights
The lights will be turned on Friday, November 24th. Calle Larios will be turned into a cathedral with domes and stained glass windows. Son et Lumiere performances take place at 6:30 and 9:30 pm and more than 1.7 million LED lights will be illuminated. Enjoy !!

We had not included Malaga in our Andalusia plans (not really beach-y sorts of people) but I would really like to see this, so we are considering stopping in Malaga between Cordoba and Granada.
Current pencil-plan has us leaving Cordoba on the morning of Thurs Jan 4 (about 2 hrs by train), and going on to Granada on Fri Jan 5 (time of day TBD). Thus one night in Malaga to see the lights.
We don't mind the occasional one-night stop.
(We could, I suppose, stay also for the night of Jan 5, traveling to Granada in time for Alhambra night entry on Jan 6 and day tickets on Jan 7. But -- having not yet researched Malaga and thinking of it as an expat beach town -- I am not sure this is worth the day. Anyone care to persuade me?)
QUESTION: can folks make suggestions where to stay for our night in Malaga, given that the purpose is to the see the light display? Budget is sub $150/n
thanks

Just answered one of my own questions (lesson: don't ask questions before a web search): it looks like there is quite a bit of interest in Malaga.
More pencil - and - erasing. Need to nail the Malaga decision asap and them lock in Alhambra tix. And I don't have much free time for web-searching today.
Hotel/location suggestions.

I stayed recently at the Hotel Roommate Larios (****) and liked it very much. It's very centrally located at the junction of Plaza de la Constitución and Marqués de Larios, all in the pedestrian zone, and where the main lighting display is located. Lots of restaurants close by.

We will be in south of Spain over the Christmas period 2018 with our 5 Yr old Granddaughter. Would you choose Malaga or elsewhere for 5-7 day stay. We are travelling around from 20/12- 10/01 in/ out of Madrid. Our itinerary is still in planning stage but we will probably have to book accommodations early next year for Christmas as we would like 3 bedroom Apartment.

We occasionally spend a few months in small town 30kms north of Malaga, usually in winter and once over Xmas. We often drove to Malaga and spent a few nights in an apartment in the centre (iLoft Malaga) it was a great loft apartment but I do know they have others - 3 beds, not sure. It was in a building on Calle Nueva 28,close to Ataranzas market, an excellent location.
It is a really underrated city and it is not all about the beach. There are lots of fantastic restaurants, bars, tapas bars in the old town and the museums are pretty good too.
The only other place I would consider for a short break over Christmas would be Sevilla, which also has a great atmosphere.

In September we stayed at Soho Malaga for 2 nights. It is in the city center, a few minutes walk from the pedestrian zone and from the Atarazanas Market. We loved Malaga! I agree with Crellston that Malaga is an underrated city. It is not all about the beach. We toured the cathedral, Alcazaba and castle, and saw the Picasso Museum. Walked along the port, and had drinks overlooking the port while watching the sun set. And lots of restaurants and bars to choose from.

Thanks to everyone for responses but ....
Crellston! so good to hear from you.
Your help with our South Asia/Thailand trip last January was most excellent. We enjoyed the 3Sis lodge in Chaing Mai, and had a great time on the MHS loop.
As full-time travelers we are always keen to hear where people "hang their hats" for a few months. And full time travelers have a different perspective on being in a place that do other folks.
So... I think we need to plan at least two or three nights in Malaga to explore it, for now and for future reference.
We are also considering a couple of nights in Marbella -- for the Spanish seafood culture, not the expat beach culture -- en route to Seville.
After we plan this Dec 12 - Jan 16 trip, we need to plan where (in the world) to go approx. Feb 20 - April 10

We liked Estepona which is a bit west of Marbella. Mix of beach town and old town. But bear in mind a lot of restaurants and shops are shut for the season. We were in Estepona in February and it was pretty quiet.

EmJayZee - good to hear you Enjoyed your time in SE Asia. We just got back from six months in Asia and Australasia- still getting over the jet lag!
I think you will enjoy Malaga, the seafood is excellent there. Can’t help with Marbella as we only passed through on our way to Gibraltar, one of my haunts as a teenager in the dim and distant past!
Like you we are debating where to go in the spring. Maybe back to Andalusia for a while but then possibly Mexico or Central America. Heard some good things about Nicaragua and Guatemala??

Will the new 350 room, 135 meter high, luxury hotel-casino in the main port (opening in 2 years?) add to the lights of the city?. Or will it simply turn Malaga into another Barcelona? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Crellston --
Thanks for endorsement of Malaga and the seafood.
We are trying to figure out how to do Gib with public transport as a daytrip from the Costa del Sol. Some do it as a daytrip from Seville, i suppose.
Perhaps overnight in Gib? Then we would have a place to put our packs while we poke around.
Haven't been to Guatemala in the past 25 years but now it is a top travel destination. Of course, CR, and have hears that Nicaragua is interesting but not yet the logistically easiest place to travel. Sadly, for safety, steer clear of Honduras these days.
<We just got back from six months in Asia and Australasia> We want to do that loop in 2019. Need to start planning (and saving pennies) now.

Robert - How awful ! Malaga is already being touted as another Barcelona - ugh. The new art museums were put up to attract the cruise ship crowd. Personally I prefer the sleepy provincial capital of yesteryear which I'm sure you remember. But, so it goes, such is "progress".
