Making a connection at Schipol
 

I'm trying to get some updated info on how it is making flight connections at the Schipol Airport, Amsterdam. Is 1 hour sufficient enough to make a conncection? I'm tempted to book a good deal I found with KLM, but I'm questioning the 1 hour layover time.

Is also safe to assume with a short layover time, that my luggage may not make it? Though I'm gonna bring an "emergency carry- on", I'm just curious what to expect.

Hi mesia, I have used KLM a lot and I have always found them to be very efficient. One hour is not a lot of time, especially if your first plane arrives late but I have never had KLM arriving late at Amsterdam except for flights from Venice due to fog (either in Venice or in Amsterdam).

I would sure make sure that if you do not make your connecting flight that there is another flight later they will put you on. Don't take a flight that has your connecting flight as the last flight out for that day.

About your luggage, even when I have had to run through the airport to get to my connecting flight KLM has always gotten my luggage on the connecting flight.

I've had luggage go astray with Schiphol connections - tight or leisurely - more often than anywhere else in the world. But it always arrives a couple of days later.

Are you sure you're only changing planes? If the connection is to another Schengen country, (say US-AMS-Italy), you have to go through Immigration (but NOT Customs) at Schiphol. At peak times, that can easily eat into your hour. But if KLM claim it's a legal connection, they'll put you on a later flight if you miss the one you're booked on. And while Schiphol is just an airport, it's as close to being a pleasant place to kill a few hours as anywhere outside Singapore could possibly be.

I will have to go through immigration, since I need to catch a flight to Rome. I don't mind having a layover for a 2-3 hours, but it seems that the next best thing is 1.5 hours.

Airlines are really driving me crazy with these short connections! I think American had one in JFK for 50 minutes!

Checking back consistently on the airline's website is worth it! Found a better deal and better connection time!
