Majorca to Barcelona - Overnight Ferry or Flight?
We are traveling from Majorca to Barcelona and trying to figure out if we should take the overnight ferry or a plane. We are thinking of cutting down our stay in Majorca from 5 nights to four nights so that we can spend a third day in Barcelona. Also, any suggestions on nice, inexpensive places to stay in Barcelona? Under 100 euro?

You also have a day ferry from barcelona leaving at 1 pm and arriving at 8 pm, much better than the airport hasle.

Plane definitely - when is the trip? Ryanair fly this route and we have flown it. The flight is around 25 minutes. If you are travelling light the tickets could be very, very cheap.
Personally, I would go to Barcelona first. Mallorca is far more relaxing. Barcelona is not top of of revisit list. We found it to be the most unfriendly, dirty and crime ridden place in Spain. As ever each experience is different but there were far too many drugs on open show. The architecture is wonderful, as are the hotels, interior design shops (putting Italy to shame) and the restaurants. Mallorca is our favourite place in Europe (we go at least once a year, sometimes 4)(off there in 10 days for a week). Spend some time in Palma it is a world class city that is frequently overlooked. The basic rule in Mallorca is avoid the busy resorts - they attract the mass market and some are dire. In effect, Mallorca has made a small fortune over the past 300 years through international trade and over the past 50 years through tourism. The Mallorquins hold their own with the Milanese in terms of style, wealth and culture. Dig beneath the surface of the mass tourist holiday resorts and you will find art festivals, classical concerts (world famous) and world class restaurants. Don't miss the old train from Palma to Soller or Bar Abaco in Palma (straight from a scene in Pirates of the Caribbean)(parrots fly round the palazzo bar). Personally, I would reinstate the extra day in Mallorca. Be careful with cheap hotels in Barcelona they may not be cheerful. Where are you staying on Mallorca? |
