Majorca Help
 

We have the chance to spend 5 nights in Majorca in April. Since this is a last minute trip, I know nothing about the island other than what I am reading on the internet. Should we stay in Palma, or Soller, or split our time between the two? Many of the hotels are already in high season prices, and I don't know where to begin.
Any help would be appreciated.

Small Island, not many centres, old train, couple of monestries, one wine region, bird watching, bizarre pearls made from fish scales and a glass works. Oh and beaches. April will be nice and not too many people there. Should be able to get lower hotel prices no matter what the high season people say.

For me Palma all week and train, car bike to the other areas.

Alternatively stay in a monestry, stay in a hotel in the middle, stay in Palma centre rather than on the massive hotels in all the sea side towns.

The island is compact enough for day trips. Moving from one hotel to another does not make sense.
Avoid the Playa de Palma or other mass tourism urbanisaciones.

Went to Majorca summer 2006. We rented a car and stayed at a small hotel, Hostel Cala Rajada. The other side of the island away from Palma. I would recommend this. Drove to a variety of beaches. Most are stunning and you can rent chairs reasonably priced. Liked the pace and feel of a smaller town, but plenty to do - shops, the market place, and great local restos. Favorite was El Cactus, but also enjoyed Pasta, Pasta. There was a restaurant about 15 minutes from town that served roast suckling pig....to die for. We did drive to Palma one day for shopping. It depends on what you prefer, staying in a town, at a beach, in the mountains, in a finca in the countryside...there are thousands of options.

Palma is a big city with an impressive cathedral, royal castle, old town, harbour, museums etc.

Soller is a midsize town with a more intimate feeling. The location is in the mountains, so you have more landscape and attractions in the area.

Generelly, the island's western coast is the nicest area of Mallorca.

Here are some of the must-sees:

- Palma
- Soller
- Valldemossa (monastery, where Chopin and George Sand lived)
- Sa Calobra (scenic rivermouth)
- Cape Formentor (scenic)

Stay in Palma. If you use public transport it will be much easier from Palma. We stayed at the Jaime II, very convenient.

We had planned on staying in Palma, however, many of the smaller hotels are already filled, and we don't care for larger hotels. There are more places in Soller that have vacancies, and a lovely B&B is Casa Bougainvillea. It has availability, but will it be difficult to get there from the Palma airport?

We went to Mallorca 3 times last year.

It is very easy to get from Palma to Soller - simply take the old train which drops you off via the mountains in Soller town - many people go solely for the journey - Soller and Soller are heading way up in the style stakes and April is a great time to go in terms of crowds -

However the weather can be vey changeable.

What is your price range for hotels?
