Major airport for Andalusia, Spain
 

I'm trying to price a open jaw ticket that flys into Madrid and flys out of ?? after our visit to Andalusia (Seville/Cordoba/Granada). Which is the best/biggest airport to fly out of without backtracking back to MAD?

Actually, Malaga is by far the busiest airport in Andalusia (because of its proximity to the Costa del Sol). From there, bus and rail connections the other big Andalusian cities are excellent.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think some of the airports in that region have little or limited international service. So it may depend on where you're coming from. For example, I think there are flights from the UK to Seville and Malaga but I'm not sure if you can fly direct from North America to both airports.

There are no direct flights between the States and any airport in Andalucia. You will have to connect in Spain through Madrid or Barcelona. There are flights to Sevilla, Granada and Malaga from England (Ryanair).

To the best of my knowledge, Madrid and Barcelona are the only Spain airports with direct service to/from the USA. You may find some unscheduled flights between JFK and Malaga

Sevilla-Madrid: 2.5 hour AVE (Rail) service. And Renfe has an overnight rail 'Hotel Tren' Sevilla-Barcelona that traverses Madrid in the wee hours of the AM. I believe it's a 'Todo Preferente' sleeper - I slept like a log coming Barcelona-Sevilla.

Have you given any thought to Lisbon, Portugal as one of your 'Open Jaw' arrival or departure points??

All of Spain's airports are at www.aena.es, where there's a full list of destinations served and the operating airlines from each airport.

You then select the airport concerned - in Andalusia, for your cities, that means Malaga, Seville, Granada (listed as "Federico Garcia Lorca- Granada/Jaen") and Jerez - and under "destinos" there's a list of cities with direct flights.

There are no flights from Andalusia to destinations outside Europe or North Africa. Note that many flights go to airports (like "Frankfurt"/Hahn or Stansted) with limited intercontinental connections, or are operated by airlines (like RyanAir or Easyjet) that don't do interlining.

As a rough generalisation, only flights to Amsterdam, Frankfurt (the real one), Heathrow, Gatwick, CDG, Brussels, Zurich Madrdid and Barcelona will easily connect with flights to intercontinental destinations, though you MIGHT find smooth intercontinental connections from Malaga via Manchester or Munich.

There used to be a direct flight in summer between NYK and Malaga.
COmbination of Madrid plus fast train to and from SEville may be the best option.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Yes, I do realize that I'll probably need to make a connection somewhere in the major cities. I just want the airport code so I can price out the ticket. I haven't thought of flying out of Lisbon. Thanks for suggesting this applealing alternative.

I am flying into Seville (SVQ) and out of Granada (GRX) in March from the US. The flights do have to connect in Madrid, but it's all on one ticket so no need to bother getting from airport to train station, and no worries about missing the connecting flight if the international leg is late (as would be the case if you fly over on a major carrier and then switch to RyanAir or Easy Jet or something). This way if there are issues with being bumped, late flights, etc the carrier (in my case Iberia) still has to get you to your destination at no added cost. When you search put in your home airport (e.g. JFK) and then SVQ or GRX and see what you get. If I remember correctly I had choices of several airlines, connecting in various European cities. Iberia was cheapest but there were others.

Most of the low costs airlines in Europe fly to Malaga and a number fly to Seville so don't restrict yourself with the "I must fly from England with Ryanair" mindset
