Since you didn't get any responses, I'm going to bring this back up to the top for you.
In the meantime, you might try doing a search here for Mainz. |
I would recommend St. Stephen's church with the fantastic Marc
Chagall stained glass windows. |
thank you BettyK.

we went to mainz basically to see that church. we had a stroll around the pedestrianized part of town, went to the gutenburg museum, but almost did not find the church..
it is a bit off the beaten track, but fortunately once we were in the neighborhood the spiral(s?) rose above the buildings and we found it. it was a jaw-dropping experience. leave enough time to sit and enjoy. |
You may like to see my trip report. We enjoyed Mainz very much.

The Romanesque cathedral, the Stephanskirche with the Chagall windows and the Gutenberg museum are the top sights. There is a pleasant Altstadt, and Mainz is an important wine market and has a famous carnival celebration

I enjoyed the Gutenberg Museum of the history of bookmaking. And strolling along the pedestrian shopping area. |
We were in Mainz on our first trip to Europe- only there overnight and catching the KD Rhine cruise boat the next morning early. We were bored in Mainz. I found it uninspiring given all thenother cities we have been to over the years.

Hello Fodorites:
Back from our trip and thank you all for suggesting Mainz. We loved our very short visit there and compared to Zurich and Rome, it was quite cheap! It was quaint and really nice overall. We loved it. Also, we found out that it was a shorter train ride to Frankfurt (15 minutes) than to Mainz (30 minutes). But the decision to spend some time in Mainz was great and were based solely on suggestions made by Fodorites. Thanks again...until next time... |
I wasn't impressed by Mainz for some reason. I did enjoy seeing the cathedral, however.
