Madrid's Art Walk is extended
 

The Mapfre Foundation has a new large exhibition space at 23, Paseo de Recoletos in central Madrid. The new centre opens with three interesting exhibitions – ‘Degas, The Process of Creation’ which displays works from the Musée d'Orsay, Musée du Louvre and others; 'Entre dos siglos. España 1900' a vision of Spanish art at the change of the century which features Sorolla, Dalí, Miró and Picasso, and also a photographic series – ‘Nicolas Nixon, The Brown Sisters’.

The building which now holds the Foundation was built in 1884 for the Duchess of Medina de las Torres, and has 1,000 square metre exhibition space over three floors.

That's great news, Revulgo. Hope to see it in a few weeks. I see the Degas exhibit will be running from until Jan. 6.

...and more, the Museum of Montserrat’s masterpieces in Madrid.

The exhibition starts with works from the 12th century and continues with late Gothic and early Renaissance works, such as Construction of a Church by Nicolás Francés and Birth of the Virgin by Pedro de Berruguete. On display will be Caravaggio’s The Penitent Saint Jerome, a magisterial composition recently restored at the Prado Museum. Other highlights include the portrait of Lafontaine, one of the few paintings by Rigaud in Spanish collections. Perhaps one of the best represented movements is Impressionism, with oil paintings by Monet, Sisley, Degas and Pissarro, all of which have few works shown in Spain’s galleries.

Some 100 works will be shown, with an outstanding selection of Catalan paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, several Impressionist works, four pieces by Picasso and three by Dalí.

Maribel, Caroline, Mapfre will be keeping their exhibition place in Azca near the Bernabeu. Right now they have a very interesting exhibition on american photographers (Diane Arbus, Walker Evans ...). The new place used to be the head office for the Mapfre division my sister works for. Everytime she went to Madrid for meetings they used to go down for lunch at the Cafe Gijon. It is beautiful.

Ah, and another excuse to come to Madrid. The Thyssen exhibition "The Avantgarde and the Great War - 1914!", and the fact that some of the big restaurants ( Chaflán, Zaranda ... ) are offering discounts or cheaper menus ...

Thanks for the further info, cova. We really enjoyed our short trip to Madrid and couple of years ago and hope to go back - a big advantage for us is that it's one of the few continental cities we can fly direct to !
