Madrid with teenagers-please help with tours, shows and classes
 

I am travelling to Madrid end of July with teenagers, 14yo son and 16yo daughter.
Looking for suggestions on (guided) tours, cooking classes (english) and flamenco show.
Which tour to consider, walking, hop on hop off bus, electrical tuktuk or Segway?

We want to visit Royal Palace, Thyssen/Prado museum, and my son hopes to have a tour of the Bernabeu stadium.
We will be spending 3full days in Madrid, then one week in Barcelona.

We used "Across Madrid Tours" a few weeks ago for our family. Our kids are younger (6 and 9) than yours but the entire family had a fantastic time and you can probably tailor the tour with them to meet exactly your interest/needs. Our experience was absolutely fantastic.

Even though your teens may roll their eyes at seeing a church, the Sagrada Familia is well worth a visit and tickets should be booked in advance. I would also recommend a guided tour, if possible, rather than the audio tour. We really enjoyed our visit and I encouraged another family to go with reluctant teens. They ended up saying it was one of their favorite sites.

The average temp. in July in Madrid is around 90 F.
This may or may not influence your family’s activities.
Because you have only 3 days , my suggestion would be to select ,ahead of time ,what to see in various museums . Prado and Thyssen are close, the RP is several metro stops away.
Madrid is a big city with excellent public transit.

It can be blazing hot in Madrid at the end of July. We spend the last few days of July there every summer, and we need to take it at a much slower pace, keeping to the shady side of the streets, stopping for many refreshment breaks, resting or just relaxing in Retiro Park, which your teens would enjoy, walking into El Corte Inglés on Serrano or Sol for a strong blast of A/C. Buses and the metro do have A/C.

There are several different companies offering Segway tours, some with tours of Retiro Park. Can't say which is the "best". Check the TA ratings.https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attracti...78-Madrid.html.

Your kids may like "horchata" or "leche merengada" (something different) at Horchatería Alboraya on Alcalá, and there are plenty of great ice cream shops, like Mistura on the Plaza Mayor, Kalúa on Fuencarral or Rocambolesc in the Mercado de San Miguel and El Corte Inglés on Serrano.

The bus 27 running along the Paseo del Prado, Paseo de Recoletos and Castellana (same boulevard) will take you up to Estadio Bernabeu, or you can use the metro. Bus 27, though, will give you a good, low cost "tour" of the northern business district of Madrid.

You'll want to purchase tickets in advance for the monuments/museums you wish to tackle, so as to avoid waiting in a long line in the hot sun (especially at the Prado and the Royal Palace). Kids usually enjoy the Reina Sofía's Picasso and Dalí rooms.

We find the best flamenco venue still to be Corral de la Morería near the Royal Palace. It even has a 4-table restaurant with a Michelin star attached-but you can go just for the show at 7:30 or 9:30--it attracts major flamenco stars and has been in business for 66 years, a legendary Madrid flamenco tablao.

There will be performances, usually free, in different venues, of Madrid's annual summer entertainment program, "Veranos de la Villa" in July and August. You can check the program later when posted to see if there's anything of interest, although your time in Madrid is short.

Some visitors like to join a food tour, although it's easy to do tapas on your own, especially if you're staying in Old Madrid, where classic, century-old tapas bars abound.

For a cooking class in English, there’s Cooking Point on Calle Moratín in the Literary Quarter. Usually these cooking classes will focus on tapas or on the preparation of a paella, since that’s the Spanish (Valencian) dish that most visitors want to learn how to prepare.

You can also beat the heat at the Madrid Río Park along the Manzanares river with its urban beach.

There's now an audio visual Klimt show, "Klimpt Immersive Experience" at th MAD (Madrid Digital Arts) in the Matadero that we caught last month. But it only goes on until June 22--don't know what is coming to MAD after that.

So glad you're able to go to Madrid in October, anon! There will be the "Picasso & Chanel" at the Thyssen, "Momias del Antiguo Egipto" at the Caixa Forum and "Sorolla en Negro" at the Sorolla. And who knows what else in the art world!

Thanks for your reply. I was checking for Prado and Thyssen' schedule. You mentioned they are close, we'll be in Madrid Sat-Sun-Mon, is there anything I don't know?

The Prado is open daily. The Thyssen is closed on Monday, except for entrance to the permanent collection which is free on Mon. from 12:00-4:00 (but special exhibits are closed).
The Reina Sofía is closed on Tuesdays.
The Royal Palace is open daily, but on Sundays only from 10:00-4:00 with last entrance at 3:00 pm.
