Madrid to Barcelona?
 

We need to get from Madrid to Barcelona while on our trip. It's come down to flying or taking a train (driving is not an option). Which do you recommend? Do you really save that much time flying? Plus, are the trains that run between Madrid and Barcelona nice? I've heard that they are not up to the same standard as many other European trains. If it would be a nice trip, we would consider the train even if it takes a bit longer. Cost is not a large issue, so we're not factoring that into our decision.

Either way, for anyone who has been on a domestic flight in Spain, any good or bad experiences with particular airlines?

There are, basically, two airlines flying this route which takes about 1 hr 5 minutes.
O/W fares can be very cheap if you book early enoguh

It's six of one and half dozen of another when trying to decide between flying and taking the train. The train tends be to less of a hassle and is comfortable enough. There are three trains to choose from, the Alvia, Altaria and Costa Brava (the overnight train). The Alvia is the quickest (about 5 hours), while the Altaria is closer to 5-1/2 hours. The cost is the same for both the Alvia and Altaria. The Costa Brava offers sleeper compartments and takes around 9-1/2 hours, arriving in Barcelona at 07:38.

Flights from Madrid to Barcelona begin as $93 USD/per person and go up from there. The flights take a little over an hour, but you have to be at the airport at least one hour ahead of time if you already have a boarding pass, earlier if you are checking any luggage, and even earlier (another hour?) if you don’t already have a boarding pass. The lines can be long, which is usually the case with Iberia.

If you are arriving on an international flight that is not a member of “One World”, then allow enough time to transfer to Terminal 4.
