madrid sunday evening dining

We will be in Madrid for a sunday in may before moving on elsewhere to a surprise party for her 60th bday. I have been to Madrid on a sunday before and know that finding a special restaurant for a celebration dinner is challanging. We will be staying in the Atocha area, does anyone have a recommendation, not too fussed about price point as it is a special day and a nice meal will hopefully deflect the mrs from her miss marple mode, enabling a nice surprise for her the next day!

Sunday evening is a tough one. I would chose La Bien Aparecida on Jorge Juan in the Salamanca district for an elegant, special meal if you're not fussed about price point.

Or if you'd rather have a classic, typical Madrid tavern atmosphere, there's Los Galayos at Botoneras in the La Latina neighborhood.

La Máquina on Jorge Juan in the Salamanca district is also open on Sunday nights, and it also has been a staple for us.

And there's Dani García's new Andalusian "Tragabuches" on Ortega y Gasset in the Salamanca district, open daily.

And in Chueca, off the Gran Vía, there´s La Burbujería, specializing in creative fare and bubbly, which my Madrid chef introduced me to, as it´s popular with chefs on their Sunday night off. One can dine here as early as 7 pm.

Hi Maribel,
thanks so much for the recommendations will have a look at those. We ate at Juana La Loca last year on the sunday which was great fun and nice food but need something a little more intimate this time. Thanks once again

tonyee,
Juana la Loca does get a little crazy busy on Sundays. My favorite dining spots around Atocha and Barrio de las Letras are closed on Sunday evening, but if you want to stay much closer to home, you may want to head to O Pazo de Lugo-La Caníbal on Argumosa, just above the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. Not intimate or particularly relaxing, but solid Galician food, well priced with a dozen or so beers on tap and also wines on tap. They have regular wine tastings there, and the food is really fine and not so expensive as the places in the very upscale street of Jorge Juan.

Just a thought to keep you closer to your lodging, if that matters at all.

I had a similar dilemma, without the party issue, and with Maribel's help I settled on La Bien Aparecida; I will be there next Sunday.

Thanks Revulgo that looks interesting and very local to our hotel.
