Madrid -- Spain 10 to 14 days in June -- Help with planning

Hi All,

Wanted to get your advice/thoughts on how to plan two weeks in Spain? I am getting the best rates if I fly into Madrid. Our only restriction is that we will be going to Tenerife Islands from June 24th till July 1st, and those flights are also cheaper from Madrid (what I checked now). So, we can spend time on mainland before and/or after our trip. What should we cover in this trip? I want to see Barcelona, if possible. I have heard Andalucia area might not be good choice because of the weather though I would love to see the strait of Gibraltar. Since we have not booked our flights, we are flexible, but we won't be able to afford more than 12-14 days on the mainland. We are a family of 5 (Children 8 to 12 year old) so I would rather stay at a base for 3 to 4 days, rather than moving every day. Any suggestions for places to see and stay, train vs. car vs. flying ..
Thanks in advance.
