Madrid,Seville in December?
 

We are thinking of visiting Spain mid December...flying into Madrid and then quickly making our way to Seville, Granada and Marbella. I know Madrid will be cold but the rest should be warm enough, right? Any advice would be much appreciated.

What is warm for you?

You could be lucky.. but remember Spain is the second most mountainous country in Europe so that affects the temperature greatly. If it is sunny, you will be able to sit outside at cafés an enjoy strolls, but once the sun goes down it will be very chilly everywhere.

You MAY be able to sunbathe in Marbella, but I doubt you will be swimming, if that was in your plans.

This winter has been very mild, but others have been freezing!

Warm enough for what? If you mean beach weather - no - there is no place in europe with beach weather in Dec. The south is usually warmer - should be fine for touring, playing golf or tennis (you may ge high 50's or even 60 during the day and colder at night). But even in the south there is skiing in the mountains and it can be quite chilly at night anywhere.

Even more unpredictable than the temperatures is the rain, IMO. I have been in Madrid and in Andalusia in December at least four-six different times. One year we got rained out, rain every single day during a two week trip in Andalusia around Christmas/New Years. Another year was non-stop sunny, clear, just beautiful. I know that most of Spain is in drought mode right now, so who knows what that means for next December?

It's hard not to be disappointed when it rains for two weeks straight on your vacation, but I think that's a real possibility, though probably still unlikely.

Madrid-just plain cold/raw!
Marbella-can be cold,rainy and windy
Spain -Not fun at all to travel at this time of year..........

I went in late Dec/early Jan and Seville was pleasant during the day as a light jacket was sufficient. At night I wore heavier clothing but I still remember being comfortable.

Granada and Madrid were much colder.

As mentioned above, everyone has a different definition of what is warm, and your weather could be completely different from what I had.

Thanks all for your feedback. I live in Chicago so have a good tolerance for cold though the warm winter we have had recently has spoiled me :)

We are going to see sights, not to be beach side. However seems even that may be uncomfortable if it is cold and rainy. We will look for another destination and plan for Spain next spring.

Andalucia is the region with more sun hours per year in Europe. It can be that its raining when you visit it, but statistically its not very likely.
