Madrid on May 1st
 

Sunday,May 1st is a holiday and we will be in Madrid on that day. Any idea if the Royal Palace,Segovia, El Escorial,or Toledo would be open on a major holiday. I was able to check some of the museums but couldn't find a website for either El Escorail, Toledo or Segovia. I think the Roayal Palace would be open from 9-3 on May 1. The Prado, Sofia, and Thyssen-Borenmisa all are closed on May 1.Thank you,

We spent a May 1st in Madrid just hanging out in parades, Tapas bars and even caught an appearance of the Royal family at a rally near the Plaza Mayor.

In Toledo, the cathedral is open 2-6 pm. Other churches are generally open. Expect most paying museums to be closed, including the new Army Museum in the Alcazar.

El Escorial is ALWAYS closed on Mondays. Many selected museums in Madrid as well. In particular May 1st, 2011 is a Sunday, so it will be celebrated on Monday, May 2nd in most of Spain. This is not sitting well with the Madrileños who already get May 2nd off (Madrid) :-D

May 1st is a holiday but because it falls on Sunday , May 2nd may be also a holiday in many places in Spain.

danon I was wrong as in 2010 the extra day falls on May 3. as the 2nd is a Sunday.

tidy-- just go to Page 3 and follow the row for Mayo 2 Lunes (May 2- Monday). The headings are the Communities (similar to the States in the USA) where Labor Day will be celebrated on May 2nd (i.e. Madrid, Andalucia...). No banking nor Officail Government offices will be open.

Tidy; Apart from the explanation above you can always try an online translator. It is not perfect, but you will get the idea.
Also given the time you plan to spend in Spain next year it would be good to learn some basic phrases.
