Madrid - Ideas for 12-year old and weekend trip

We're (myself, my husband and our 12 year old son) heading to Madrid on November 23 to visit our 20-year daughter who is studying in Madrid this semester. My husband and I have been to Madrid several times so our primary objective in Madrid is to make sure our 12 year old enjoys himself (it's his first trip to Europe). We are staying at the Westin Palace for the first four nights. We plan on taking him to the changing of the guard at the Palacio Real as well as the Prado and perhaps the Thyssen. Any other ideas? Also, we want to take a trip outside of Madrid for Friday and Saturday night. Our last trip to Madrid (in 2003) we took our daughter to Toledo, Segovia and Avila. She's already been to Segovia, Barcelona, Cordoba and Granada this year and she's heading to Morocco the weekend before we arrive. We are thinking about heading to the Parador Ciudad Rodrigo for a couple of nights, stopping at Salamanca on the way and taking a day trip to Portugal on Saturday. We'll drive back to Madrid late on Sunday, stay by the airport and fly out mid-morning on Monday. Does this sound worthwhile? Any other ideas for a weekend trip from Madrid which my daughter hasn't already taken?

How many trips must someone take to the same destination before their curiosity is satisfied? I have been to Toledo at least a half dozen times in the past 10 years, Segovia at least four times, Pedraza another half dozen and Avila twice. The list goes on and on, but there is not one place that I would not enjoy visiting again, if not two or three more times. You never see everything on your first trip and usually just end up skimming the surface. You might want to ask your daughter if she would enjoy spending some quality time in Barcelona, Cordoba and Granada, or even Toledo, Segovia and Avila before writing them off completely. The second visit can end up being much more exciting then the first.

Some suggestions for your son:
* The Royal Palace and its Royal Armory:

* FAUNIA, a zoo with artificially controlled ecosystems. There is the largest reconstruction of a Polar Eco-system in Europe, that houses animals from both the North and South poles. In contrast, the Amazon Jungle area is a reconstruction of the rainforests and is kept at a temperature of 28 degrees Celsius with 80% humidity.

* Real Madrid Soccer Stadium tour:

* Indoor skiing at Snowzone, Xanadu Shopping Center.

* Go for a stroll through the Retiro Park. Close to the northern entrance of the Parque del Retiro is a large pond, the Estanque del Retiro. Here you can rent a rowing boat, especially popular during weekends.

* Try some delicious "chocolate con churros":

* and "jamon" too !

* Take a high speed train to Segovia. Your son will enjoy visiting the castle (Alcazar) and seeing the stunning Roman aqueduct that has remained standing for nearly 2,000 years !! Don't forget the unmissable "cochinillo" (roast suckling pig) or "lechal" (roast lamb) at 'Casa Candido'. Advance reservations are recommended.
