Madrid Hotels - Which? Villa Real, Hotel Urban, Westin?
I am having trouble deciding between these three hotels. Which would you choose? My husband and I will be in Madrid for three nights in March before we head off to Sevilla and Granada. I like the central locations of all three and need help deciding. Thanks, Susan

There are many comments for each of them on tripadvisor (they all seem excellent). You can check those out if you already haven't.

MFNYC - Yes I have checked Tripadvisor and this site as well. But as you say, they all have good reviews. I was just looking for more help with the decision.

Hi Susan,
We stayed at Villa Real about 4 years ago. If I remember correctly it was walking distance to Plaza Mayor and Palacio Real. The Prado is close as well. The room at the hotel was fine -- nothing fussy, but comfortable and spacious. We, too, went on to Seville after Madrid. You will LOVE Seville!! Have a great trip. |
3 amazing hotels. I think it is a toss up between the Urban and Westin Palace.
I was just in Madrid last week and stopped in at the Hotel Urban. If you like your hotels with a more modern contemporary design, then I would go with the Urban. If you like more classical (perhaps even old European charm), then the Palace is the place to be in Madrid. Buen viaje! |
Stayed in the Westin for one night this past October. Got the room on Priceline and it turned out to be fantastic; big room with a wonderful view. In fact, my review, with photos, is on tripadvisor.com.
You can also see pictures on my website; http://www.wired2theworld.com We also went to Sevilla and Granada during our trip. Have a great time! |
The Urban and Villa Real belong to the same group, Derby Hotels. The Urban is very upscale and comfortable, and the place to be, but its standard double rooms are on the small side. The junior suites are a little larger and of course the suite is very nice and quite a bit larger.
The Villa Real, only a few steps away, has much larger rooms and is more of a traditional 5-star classic hotel with excellent service. Both are excellent choices, but you may want to consider the Gran Hotel Canarias (http://www.granhotelcanarias.com/), a 4-star GL (gran luxury), located at Plaza Cánovas del Castillo, 4, around the corner from the Urban. The hotel is very comfortable and has an excellent staff. It's also very quiet. The rooms overlooking the avenue are smaller, but offer an excellent view. I prefer the inside rooms myself. It’s also highly recommended in Maribel’s Guide to Madrid. |
I have stayed at the Villa Real twice(last time last summer) and I really like it. I have also stayed at the Palace. IF they were the same price I would stay at the Palace but lately the Palace has been much more expensive. I find the Villa Real and the Urban very good value.

Through a corporate deal I can get the Palace for the same price as the Urban. The Villa Real is about 30 euro less a night than the other two. But I have read a couple of not wonderful reviews on the Villa Real recently on tripadvisor. I am leaning towards either the Palace or the Urban.

My wife and I stayed at Urban in October. Service was great, rooms spacious and the hotel is very cool. Very similar to the W chain. Recommend Urban.

We stayed at the Real in June. Good location, good helpful, English-speaking staff. The room size was fine - bed area & a step down to sitting area. Bathroom got my wife's seal of approval. We felt it was a good choice @ 150 €.

We stayed at the Hotel Urban in October last year, and although we were really jetlagged, it was one of the most comfortable hotels we have stayed in. Maybe in terms of US chain hotels, the room was small, but it was really quite nicely laid out and didn't really feel that crowded. It had a great bed and great bathroom. Front desk staff were very nice and the breakfast (included in our room rate) was the best we had in Spain.

We stayed at the Palace in 2004 and It was EXCELLENT, the room was big and the bed so good, the bathroom is very nice with all the goodies incl. salts to take a nice relaxing bath after your flight. The public areas are very nice too.
Concierge is very good, they can find anything for you, they have all kind of connections. Is very close to the Prado and other museums, you can walk to Puerta del Sol, Gran Via, etc (10 mins aprox) and there is an excellent restaurant just two or three blocks from the hotel, "Rincon de Esteban" . Hope that you enjoy your trip to Madrid. |
