I was last week in Carlos V enjoyed it. Is near the Puerta del Sol and the Plaza Mayor. It is a shopping area and it is crowded (which is good, special at night). Buffet breakfast was excellent and rooms very clean. I don't know M.A. but I will recommend this one to my friends visiting Madrid.

I do not how much you want pay for a room per day, but I be in Madrid 8/15 in a hotel located in a excellent location. One side is on La Gran Via Blvd. (around $75.00double per night)
Hotel Regente (try) or check it.
Von Voyage, see you there.(I think this will be cheaper that Miguel Angel)

Also from there you can go anywher everything is around

Does anyone know what 2-star and 3-star hotels in the center of Madrid cost? thanks.

We were there two months ago for 2 weeks and stayed the Hotel Opera and then moved to the Santo Domingo. Santo Domingo was very nice and both are on Santo Domingo street which is close to everything as we walk everywhere (spending our cash on the hotels...) Anyhow, both were great but we liked Santo Domingo more. The rates are about the same as decent hotel in New York.

Consider the Hostal Persal. The first three floors are refurbished and have A/C (not always available in Madrid). The price is around $65 per night. Great breakfast. Located two blocks from Plaza Mayor and three from the Prado. Helpful staff. Just be sure they give you a room in the remodeled part of the place. Otherwise, you could end up sweating to death. We and our children stayed in Madrid at the Santa Domingo two years ago. As I recall a double room was $125 or so. The breakfast was excellent (our children still talk about it) but costs extra. It is a lovely hotel (though a few bedrooms looking a tad worn), beautifully equipped marble and tile bathrooms, comfortable beds, great central AC, and very quiet. Housekeeping was outstanding. The location, while not picturesque, was great. You could walk to so many things, but the Santo Domingo underground stop was right in front of the hotel. We would stay there again.

I highly recomment the Hotel Plaza Mayor. I just spent 5 days there this last month. It's as centrally located as you can get and you literally can walk out the door and cross a small street and you're on the Plaza Mayor. The staff were incredibly nice and a single room is $35! Before I went there I was worried it may be run down or something because of the price, not even close. Great rooms with safe, TV, air conditioning and very modern bathrooms. They just finished remodeling the reception and cafe. It was so nice being right off of the Plaza Mayor, which is also just a couple of blocks from Puerta del Sol, some great cafe's and shops as well as some unexpected happening in the plaza. It's not a big hotel which is the way I liked it and at night it was very quiet.
You won't be disappointed.

Here's the site I booked the Hotel Plaza Mayor off of as well as my hotel in Barcelona.

http://www.hotelsearch.com

Great site.

Thanks for that site Brent. I like it!
Bill to answer your question about the Miguel Angel,it's close to the new business area of Madrid. You need to be closer to the tourist/historical spots otherwise you'll be taking the metro or taxis everywhere. For the price you're paying you could stay at the Westin Palace,Crowne Plaza but you really don't need to go that high.Years ago I started to recommend the Carlos V,now part of the Best Western and I still like it.Try to get a room w/balcony,great for people watching-it's on a pedestrian only street. As mentioned the breakfast is great as is their airport shuttle bus.Best of all is it's location.Hope you have time to checkout the locations on a map .The Miguel Angel doen't even appear on the the maps of central Madrid.
