Madrid Hotel Recommedations
We will be in Madrid for 4 nights from 14 Sep - 18 Sep. Budget is $150 per night, but the lower the better (preferably less than $130).
We would like to be located in an area that's central to most of the attractions, with good restaurants and entertainment. Nearby transportation options preferred, though it seems like Madrid is mostly a walking city anyway. From what I've read on the neighborhoods, it seems like Plaza Mayor and Puerta Del Sol are the top choices. Gran Via also sounds like a good alternative.
I would tremendously appreciate any suggestions based on the criteria above. Thanks in advance!

You didn't ask, but here's a one bedroom apartment we're renting for a week, but they rent for a minimum of 3 nights. It's even air conditioned. In a great area for all you say. And it rents for 125 euro per night.

We have just returned from 19 days in Spain, 6 of them in Madrid. We loved our hotel, Hotel Mario, which is part of http://www.innsofspain.com/ it was very well located at the Opera metro stop, walking distance to everything. Very modern with a wonderful breakfast included. There is also free internet access in the lobby.

We recently spent four nights at Hotel Preciados and recommend it wholeheartedly. It's centrally located, within walking distance of the major sites. The rooms were well appointed--in a modern way--and the staff very helpful.

another vote for hotel preciados. it's on calle preciados, a lively pedestrian street than runs between plaza mayor and villa del sol. there's an fnac and el corte ingles on one end of the street. the hotel is very modern, very friendly staff and the included breakfast is sumptuous. i looked up their rates from the previous poster's link, their prices have gone up by a lot since we stayed there in Dec 2004. we paid 99E/night for 5 nights with included buffet breakfast. it's still a very nice, modern hotel worth recommending even if their prices have gone up.

We also stayed at the Plaza Mayor in 2004 (see abby97, above) and thought it was great. We stayed there again this year, and all rooms have been renovated; Hotel Plaza Mayor is better than ever. Our room (superior double at 90 euros) was very large by comparison to most European hotels I have stayed in. Ambiance, location, and accommodations all were excellent. I cannot imagine staying anywhere else in Madrid.

We enjoyed our stay at the Intur Palacio San Martin http://www.hotelinturpalacio.com/. It's in between Sol and Gran Via, in a quiet little Plaza (San Martin). I've commented on it on the forum before -- you might run a search for more details.
We were able to book for about 100E/night last May. I ran your dates and got 166 for the first night and then 111 for the subsequent nights (that's Euro) which is a little higher than you want.
Maribel gives great recs in her downloadable (is that a word?) guide at www.maribelsguides.com. I wouldn't go to Madrid without it.

We have had very good luck booking through http://www.utell.com/, requesting the GreatRate, which includes a big breakfast.
