Madrid Hotel Help!!!!
 

Hi

Can anyone recommend a good hotel in Madrid. Looking for somewhere really nice but not too expensive- I know not asking for much, am i??

depends on when you are going. we stayed at the westin; gorgeous, good location and not terribly expensive if you are there in low season.

We stayed at the Best Western Atlantico for €99 per night. Great location.

I also like the Westin Palace but it got too expensive or me. The last 3 years we have stayed at the Villa Real, which is very close to the Palace , in an excellent location.

We usually pay around 140 Euros.

It's part of the Derby hotel group. I f you Google it you'll find it.

I like the Plaza de Espana Crowne Plaza hotel. The rates I got for a March stay was about 100€.

I stayed at the Hotel Rom Mate Alicia last week and loved it. Right on the Plaza Santa Ana in a beautifully renovated old building. Rooms are very contemporary and fun. Our suite was designed in a very creative way and cost much less than I would have expected.

We like the Hotel Europa -- 3 star dead center in Madrid at Purto del Sol. Front rooms can be a little noisy but we like them because they overlook the plaza with tiny balconies.

Another vote for the Villa Real. Great location, staff & nice rooms. Only 2 -3 blocks to the 'big' three museums.

I really liked the Palacio San Martin - it's one of my favorite hotels in Europe and I think very nice. You can get it at very reasonable rates a lot of times. It's just a little east of the Opera.

We didn't like Hotel Europa. OK for "student travel", but wouldn't stay there again (we're not students anymore).

Haven't been students for about 50 years but have no idea what you mean by "student travel." We thought it was great but we are not used to staying in 5 star either so maybe our standards are not high enough.

I guess we just didn't think it was even 3 star, but that's just our opinion. It was o.k.--I know Rick Steves likes it, and I really respect his opinion, but we didn't like the rubber matress covers under the sheets, the too small room, and just don't think it meets Cailin's request for:
"somewhere really nice but not too expensive."

Sometimes people even recommend 1-2* hotels when folks ask for a nice hotel, it's so subjective and the OP hasn't really said what that means. I would also assume it's a 4* hotel, but if only a nice 2*, clarification might help. Student travel is real cheap and things we put up with when young and poor (and less used to comfort), that we wouldn't as adults earning a decent living.

Christina, I agree with you that we don't know what "really nice," But I thought it was kind of cheap shot at Hotel Europa as student housing. We have stayed there twice for a total of about ten days. We thought it was very nice especially for the money. Don't remember rubber sheets but maybe they had a family room. When the boys were younger and used family room more we did encounter some beds with protective covering on the mattress. Probably a good plan. The rooms at Europa were not overly spacious but both bathrooms were bigger and nicer than many hotels we have stayed in. Don't know current prices but would have no reservations about going back. And the location cannot be beat.
