Madrid Hotel

Has anyone stayed at the Best Western Santo Domingo? I would appreciate any feedback.

Havent stayed in that one but have stayed in other Best Western Hotels in Madrid and Rome. Both meant to be 4* but were more like 2* so we dont do BW after that.
The Sol Melia chain is quite good - have you looked at any of their hotels?

a friend of mine was staying there a while back, and he said it was fine, the location however is really good, straight of gran. myu folks when they were over a couple of years back stayed at the Hotel Husa Princesa , which is on the calle princessa, not that far out of the centre and they liked it. i dunno how much it cost. for central though, try the emperador, slap bang in gran via. a mate of mine was asking about to come over in august so i check it out for him. its really nice.

Believe me, you do not want to stay on Gran Via or any of its side streets nor anywhere near the Puerta del Sol. It's the top area for pickpocketings and muggings.

And the Emperador is anything but nice. I know, I suffered there for a few days before I found something much nicer, which unfortunately no longer exists.

I recently stayed in the marvelously gracious and quiet Gran Hotel Conde Duque, which is just stone's throw from the Prado, etc. in a great non-touristy and safe neighborhood.

You can often get good discount rates through booking sites like bookings.es or Holiday City. The lobby could use some refurbishment but the rooms are terrific, and overlook a small urban garden.

I have also enjoyed, very much, staying at the Hotel Suecia, which is very conveniently located to the museums. However, you need to know that some of the rooms don't have windows. I didn't mind, since it helped me get over my jet lag, but were I booking a longer stay, I would have asked for a room with a window.

PS: I should correct the above post to say that the Gran Hotel Conde Duque is just two Metro stops from the Prado.

I haven't stayed at this one, but did stay at the Best Westen Carlos V in Madrid which is near Plaza Mayor. It was 3*, and similar to other 3*s we stayed in Europe. The room was a good size (we had a quad), the staff friendly and the breakfast decent.

Did you check tripadvisor? Santo Domingo has lots of mixed reviews.

i think eloise view is a wee bit alarmist. the only part of gran via not recommended ar the streets toward the top end such as montera, valverde and ballesta etc. these streets are weasy to spot just by the folk walking around there. i was in the emperador and didnt seem that bad. why was it bad? (so i can tell my friend not to book it)?
