Madrid and Barcelona trip- directions from airport to hotel

We're leaving for a 5 night Madrid 5 night Barcelone trip on Thursday. Can anyone give me detailed directions on which is the best (cheapest) way to get from the Madrid airport to Atocha station? (our hotel is within walking distance from it). I think we can take the Metro, but I'm a bit confused as to which lines to take and where to change.

Also, for Barcelone: how to get from the airport to the Sagrada Familia?

Thanks a bunch.

I would use the taxi in both cases, especially if this is your first trip to Madrid. A taxi will have you at your hotel in under 30 minutes. It would take nearly an hour by metro, if you make the connections.

If you want to take the Madrid metro, they have a route planner available on-line at http://www.metromadrid.es/en/index.html.

Anyway, I assumed you'd be landing at Barajas T1, T2, or T3, and trying to get to the actual Atocha train station. There is a separate metro station (but on the same line) for T4/T4S. Your destination is Atocha Renfe, which drops you off right in the Atocha train station. There is a separate stop for Plaza de Atocha, one stop earlier. It takes 45 minutes and requires two changes of subways -- one from Line 8 to Line 10 at Nuevos Ministerios, and then a second from Line 10 to Line 1 at Tribunal.

All in all, this costs €2 per person. Line 8 has a €1 airport surcharge, otherwise the cost would be just €1 per person for the whole trip. A taxi from Barajas to Atocha would be around €25-€30.
