Madrid and Algarve, Portugal

My daughter and I are going to Madrid to look at a University in mid-June. We only have 1 week, and a limited budget. Is it practical to go to the Algarve in Portugal for a day or 2? If it is do-able, then what is the best way?
Thanks,
~R.

Ops, IMHO Algarve is a little far away from Madrid for a doable trip of 2 days.

Perhaps daytrips are more interesting for you (such as El Escorial, Toledo, Segovia, Avila)

Hope you'll enjoy.

I suggest Valencia, a nicer place. It is 3-1/2 hours by train from Madrid.
