I’m so confused since I keep getting conflicting advice. I’m flying on Ireria from Miami to Rome which involves a change of planes in Madrid. I’ll be arriving at an international terminal and will depart from Madrid to Rome in another terminal.

1. Do I go through immigration in Madrid or Rome?
2. The itinerary is booked on one ticket. Do I need to claim my baggage and recheck for the Madrid to Rome portion of the trip?
3 Is it a long walk from international terminal to other terminals? Is there a bus or people mover available. I’m unable to walk very long distances (over one mile)

Not knowing which airline you're flying on from Miami to Rome, it's difficult to know which terminal you'll be connecting through, but if Madrid is your first stope in the EU, then yes, you'll to passport control in Madrid. You should not have to worry about your luggage, but again, that deends on your connection.

International flights typically arrive at terminal 4S, although some international flights from the States still arrive at terminal 1.

You'll arrive at Terminal 4S at Madrid airport and go through passport control/immigration. You'll then ride an automatic train from T4S to Terminal 4, where you'll go to the gate for your flight to Rome. There are reader boards all over the place to tell you what gate to go to.

At Rome you won't go through immigration, since that will have been handled at Madrid. You'll go to bag claim and retrieve your bags, then go through customs, which is basically walking through the "green" door out to the world. You won't see your bags at MAD; they'll be checked through to Rome.

Terminals 4 and 4S ("S" for satellite) at Madrid airport are enormous, and walks to the gates can take a long time. I recommend using the lifts/elevators at either end of the connecting train, as the escalators can be very full and very slow.
